I've been lurking on this site for something like 4 years now, finally registered the other day and decided to posts some pics of the garage to our house we bought a couple of years ago.

The house was built in 1949, but the garage was added in 1967...the house and garage sit way up high on a ridge with a pretty neat North facing view for miles and miles. The garage is approx. 36' wide by 24' deep with two car bays and one workshop on the middle story, two car bays and a workshop space in the basement, all with a 2 bed, 1 bath, kitchen and living room up top. I thought I'd share the before photos since we plan on doing to pretty significant remodeling (like new huge windows for the view).

Sorry, no pics of the inside on my phone yet. I contacted the daughter of the original owner/builder and she has sent me some old photos. Here's the driveway & house in 1951 I think, and the same driveway last year.

Thanks! Sorry for the small pics, I just started a photobucket account so they'll be bigger from now on. The drive at the lower garage needs some shoring up for sure, plus something other than mud to drive on.

Here's a few more pics from the last year. The walkout basement of the house has some pretty cool stonework and slate that reminds me of a state park. The living room in the house has the same stone as the garage (excuse the mess)

Hope it's ok to throw some house pics in with the garage.

We're the forth owner since 1949 and the first family to actually live there full time as the others all used this as a vacation home. Even more cool, my grandfather worked for the guy who originally owned the place and he took care of the property, among other duties, for all three owners prior to us. Unfortunately, he passed away two years before we bought the property.

Ah, I got it now. Here's about the only interior shot of the garage I have. This is in the basement portion. The pool table is going away and I'm going to clean the block walls and seal that at some point. I'm resisting the temptation to add gigantic windows everywhere for light and the view (which you can't see any of from this bay)

Here's a shot of the garage apartment balcony...the wood's in real rough shape and the cedar shakes on the roof are original 1967. I'm really not sure how they are still attached.

Here's a couple more taken slightly down the hill and one at sunrise

I'm trying clear the hillside by hand, but it's way steeper than the pics make it seem. Someday I'd like to be able to pull into the garage and see through some floor to ceiling windows like the Ferris Bueller garage, except a bit less glass.

WOW! This is a SWEET setup! So do you plan to put in a paved driveway to the lower basement portion? Like someone else said, that right hand side is a little steep right out the door! :scared:

Also, the Ferris Bueler window thing..... DO IT!!!!!!!!!

Keep us posted, this is a really interesting place you have, congrats!

Wow!

That some serious garage space with an aerie on top for living.

Just some ideas for you to mull over.

If I was redesigning it, I would open up all the walls that have views, on all 3 levels.

Glass walls, ceiling to floor and wall to wall. If insulation was a worry, I would make rolling insulated panels that could cover part or all.

It would make for the most amazing and wonderful living AND shop/garage space.

Then the roof would be a special opportunity. A rooftop sundeck? Partly covered with a sunshade? Plantings?

Geez, I love everything about it! Location is beautiful, house has character, the patio is so inviting...
Can't wait to see more, along with update pics.
Looks like there is a neighbor close by, how big is the property?

Thanks guys,

CDD1, I'm actually in Indiana. Most people would be surprised to find this topography here. The view, among other reasons, really is what drives everything about this place, hence the desire to have tons of glass everywhere so I can maximize the view.

clutch93, I've been obsessively covering the "Concrete Underground" thread since it's inception years ago because of all that glass. This place is screaming for way more of it. I actually want to cut through the stone veneer on the one wall that shows the basement garage doors to add windows. That should be fun.

bczygan, the roof to the garage has a really interesting shape...almost like a hybrid hip/mansard. It's a shall pitch on the topside and you might be able to construct a deck of sorts all the way at the top. I've stood up there many times and it's easily the best view on the whole property. It's amazing what an extra 10-20 ft. does for your range.

Jay Sco, thanks for the compliments. We really do love the place. It sits on about 93 and a half acres with hardly any "neighbors". It's built like a tank. I have next to no drywall (me and drywall have a hate/hate relationship)...everything seemed to have been built to a higher quality and character in 49. The house , shown in the old photograph, was actually concrete block all the way to the roof. They covered the thick flat roof up with a new gable roof on the house when they built the nearby garage. I've found some really cool things along they way; old lanterns, tools, etc that I'll try to post and share.

When I get a chance next week, I'll snap some photos of the garage interior and general layout. I'd love to have a lift, but both garage levels are actually suspended. There's practically a 4th story (basement to a basement) under the basement garage floor. I can't get to it, but that's how they built it.

Well call me stupid! I misunderstood and thought the living quarters above the garages was the house, and the other building (the house) was neighbors. So it works out great, you DO have room for me to move in! Damn, 93 acres?! You are very fortunate, this place is amazing. Tell us more about this sub-basement, sounds interesting.

Wow that is one incredible place, sorry if you've post it but where is that?

Indiana? What they have a few hills there? Imagine they would as Missouri had some nice rolling hills and Ohio even has places to ski.

What is your elevation there?

Sorry for the confusion, the house sits right next to the garage. Since the roof is such a different shape, people usually think it's a different residence.

Elevation is something around 900 ft. That's not very high in comparison to other places, but the stuff surrounding me for miles is about 300ft lower so it makes for good long range views.

Looking from the back side of the garage lower level, under the pad, there's another 7 or so courses of block and no footer in sight (haven't dug down yet). You can tell my smacking the floor that it's a suspended floor (at least I'm assuming). However, there's not scuttle or anything for a crawl. I do have a water pipe coming up from the floor and there's some space around the pipe to jam in a camera snake to take a look around.

When I get back home I'll snap some pictures.

I was one that got confused as well. A house AND a garage with an apt on top. They don't compliment one another well but each is spectacularly unique. Fun place.

I love the architecture and overall look of the garage and the area. Everything looks perfect. It's a look you can't achieve with a new building.
And that picture with the winding road and the trees is desktop wallpaper worthy.
