Good evening. I am just about ready to install switches in my new shop. I was originally planning to put my outdoor spotlights on a standard 3-way switch-one switch at the entry door and another switch upstairs. Then I got to thinking (always dangerous and expensive) and was wondering about putting a 3-way switch with a timer by the entry door into the shop. Does anyone have this setup? Can anyone recommend a brand/unit they use and like?

Appreciate all the knowledge.

Matt

If you want to control your outside lights with a timer, why might you need another switch upstairs? My outside lights are controlled with a timer on around dusk and off around dawn, I never thought I might need to over ride with a manual switch. If for some odd reason I needed to shut them off, I would just walk over to the timer and do it there.

I suppose if you have a timer that turns them off at some time like midnight, you might want another switch capable of turning them on at 3 AM if you heard and intruder or if a drunken friend came to see you in the middle of the night.
