30 Amp disconnect for Water Heater

Would there be any issues if I replaced my 30 amp water heater disconnect with one that has a 15 amp GFCI in the box? I don't have a receptacle on that side of the basement. Just thinking of a easy way to get some power over there. Could it damage the thermostat?

All like that i've seen need a separate15 amp circuit to power the gfci.

It's pretty much a sure thing that you only have a 240V circuit to your water heater. Meaning you CANNOT tap a 120V circuit off it since there is no neutr4al present.

IF you have a neutral and ground present, along with the two hots, you could use a small panel with a separate 15 or 20A breaker feeding the GFI. You CANNOT have the GFI off the 30A circuit alone.

Says on the box that the gfi and 240 volt load are wired separately. If you drag a 15 amp 120 volt circuit over there, it would be fine.

Run a new 12 wire. Do not try to convolute a circuit.
