30 amp Generator power inlet box

I have searched but can't seem to find an answer so I thought I'd ask.

I am collecting what I need to install a transfer switch for hooking my generator to the house. I can't find if the power inlet box that mounts outside has to be a specific distance off the ground. It will actual by on a wall of a covered porch. Partly due to looking like the best place for it (protected from the weather and what not) and due to the insane price of wire.

Does anyone know, if by code, there is a minimum height that it needs mounted? Where I live, you have to pull a permit and have it inspected. I just want to make sure it's done right the first time.

I think it falls into the same stuff as all other panels. There is no minimum height. There is a maximum height (for accessibility - 6'7"). Someone is welcome to correct me if I have it wrong.

He's asking about the height of the inlet box off the ground, not the height of the transfer panel.

How high were you thinking about mounting it? I have my current one at about 4ft, which makes it really easy to see the pin alignment

In the township where I live, the minimum distance to the BOTTOM of a power inlet box, or any other electrical box, mounted to the outside of the house, on a pole, or piece of wood/metal such as a deck post, is 24 inches. This is the measurement from the ground to the bottom of the box.

There is no maximum distance specified. The 24 inch distance also applies to any electrical box that is placed in a closed or open porch, a breezeway, or a covered patio, when those places have a floor, decking, concrete or some other type of base that is something other than the ground/dirt/grass. All of these areas are considered "outside" the home.

This minimum distance is so that all electrical boxes will have enough room under them so that they do not get bumped into while people are walking, pushing a kids stroller, mowing the lawn (on electrical boxes mounted above grass) and so on. In the case of the boxes mounted where rain could hit them, it is supposed to help keep splashing water from coming up from the ground and hitting the box.

Makes it easy since the minimum distance is the same for every electrical box that is not mounted inside the actual living structure of a home.
