Ok so, I am trying to rewire my Kobalt 30 gallon air compressor to run 220v. It was originally wired 110 from the factory but as I have been upgrading some of my tools in recent months, I have also been taking the opportunity to switch many of my larger tools from 110v to 220v. I have had schooling in my younger years on electrical wiring, so I know for the most part what I am doing electrically. I have successfully retired my table saw and radial arm saw to opportunity on 220v and purchased, some time ago, a new bandsaw which was already wired for 220v. Neither the table saw nor the radial arm saw were any issue in switching over. However I have found it to be a bit confusing now that I am trying to switch over my air compressor.
The motor has a wiring diagram which starts out pretty straight forward move one wire here, swap these wires there. Pretty easy until I come upon a wire or actually 2 wires that have stumped me. I imagine that I am overthinking it, but I figured someone on here could help me. Basically, the last wire in the diagram is the white wire, which is supposed to switch from slot 6 to slot 5 with the orange wire. Herein lies the problem, I have 2 white wires on the prongs at slot 6 but only one available prong on slot 5 to put the white wire. Therefore, I have an extra white wire with no where to put it. One of the white wires is coming from the farther inside the motor with the other colored wires. The other white wire is part of the main power coming from the switch and ultimately, the plug. That white wire is my typical neutral leg of the plug wire that has a white wire, black wire, and a green wire.
So my question is, which white wire am I to put on the prong with the orange wire and where do I plug the other white wire? The compressor manual is useless in helping. I have swapped all the other wires in the motor over as directed in the diagram, but those pesky white wires have stumped me.
