I've been surfing this site for about a year now and finally have some photos of my build to share. My barn is a 2 story 30x40 with a 12x40 "lean to". We're getting close and waiting on the metal sheeting. I attached a few photos of the build in my photo album.

Yeah, I tried to add them to the post but had some trouble. Click on my user name (Trophycase) and view my public profile and the photos of my build are there. I'll try it again.

Ah ha, it looks like it worked.

Enjoy

Finally, the metal siding is going on. The roof will be a dark brown. I'm starting to get the lighting and electrical layout done.

The slab was poured with a thickened edge. It's about 12" thick on the edges then tapers to about 4" in the center. So I guess you could say most of the slab is 4" thick. It should be strong enough to carry most anything, but I'd be a little concerned about getting my backhoe in there to do work on it. The hoe weighs about 20,000 lbs.

What are the plans for the upstairs? What will the dimensions of that part be? How about the wall height on both floors. Trying to decide which way to build mine and love the look you got going :)

The main part of the barn is 30x40 and the lean is 12x40. The ceiling height on the bottom is 10 foot (my builder had it originally at 12' but it would have been just way to tall). The 2nd floor is 14x40 with an 8' ceiling. I'm 6'5" so I wanted a little headroom, I hit my head on enough stuff as it is. At this point we will be using the upstairs as storage and it should receive drywall in the next year or so when my funds allow.

I have helped with quite a few shops and the ones who built up the edge have held up without any major cracks. All your construction books and such recommend it be done that way im planning that for mine. Nice Shop..

The roof is finally going on and the dormers are proving to be quite the challenge. We should be real close in a week, I can't wait to take some time off for the July 4th weekend.:drink:
The inside shots are upstairs in the loft and also one of the "lean".

Wow, that looks really nice. Any chance of more pics including the house and grounds? Looks like you have a really nice plot of land there.

We're heading out of town for the 4th of July weekend so I'll post more photos when we get back. I have some cool shots of it looking down from up on the "mountain" in the background before the barn started. I might be able to find a couple shots from 2005 & 2006 when this whole thing started

Happy 4th everyone!!!

Trophycase,

One very nice house. The barn looks like it will be a great work space. Any particular plans for the lean to area? If I ever get to build the space I want it would include one.

The cupola and the roof are finished for the most part. Vents needed to be painted to match the light brown metal and will be installed tomorrow to complete the cupola. While I was on vacation for the 4th weekend, Xcel energy set the meter and connected the "Juice", 200 Amps:thumbup: . To pass inspection I have one light in the middle of the barn, one outlet and one light by each door. I will be handling the rest of the wiring as time permits. I will be scouring the Lighting and Electrical forums for some assistance.

jhn9840.....you asked about the 12x40 lean. This is where my big Quincy compressor will be housed to keep the noise down a bit along with all the "dirty" stuff I don't want in the shop...my lawnmower, 2 tractors, ATV's, shovels & rakes etc. I need the room inside for my porsche and VW projects.

The main inspiration for this style of barn came from www.unclehowards.com
This company has some of the most awesome looking barnes I have ever seen. Unfortunately I could not afford post and beam construction and cedar siding. Our dry Colorado air is not very friendly to cedar siding anyway. If you have not visited the site, I highly recommend it, you'll drool all over your keyboard....just warning ya!!

On a side note if you ever get a chance to vacation in Colorado, get down to Durango, it was beautiful!! One of the days we took a Hummer (yeah the big one...H1) to about 13,500 feet, the picture does not do it justice.

I showed your barn to my wife and she loved it. She said the only thing missing was the "Thingy on the roof". And I too instantly drooled at the site you got the idea from.

I stayed a few summers Durango with my parents. It's a great place to relax and explore your surroundings. Nice town too, with plenty to see and do.

hpw, I have a 1960 bug that once was a race car that we completely re-did to put back on the street. We still drag race it from time to time and it typically runs high 14's in the quarter mile. We also have a "Thing" and a Cal look style 1970 and finally my current project is a 1961 Porsche 356. I used to have a 1962 bug drag car that I sold a few years back, I think it's in Denmark now.

I visit The Samba daily!! Grate site.

Sorry for getting off topic

I love that barn. Your back yard looks great too. Can't wait for more pictures as you get he finished up.
Will the lean to side have doors? I assume so, but I couldn't tell in the last couple pictures.

Man am I ever jealous. Jealous of your Barn and the view. I grew up in Thornton (suburb of Denver) and miss the Rocky Mountains every day. Love the Barn and can't wait to see the finalized project

I just got word yesterday that the metal guys are done. The 9x16 overhead door will be installed in the next couple of days then I can do the paint work on it this weekend. The stairs came out real nice leading up to the second floor. I've got to get that door up there painted as well. The only other thing I need to do is fabricate the 3 sets of doors on the lean. I will probably do them using a 1.5x1.5 square tubing since I have a bunch of metal from other projects. I like the look of cross buck carriage doors, so I'm leaning that way.

I also need to get the floor painted before moving anything in. I painted my 3 car garage with epoxy paint (I can't remember the brand I used) about 4 years ago and could not be happier. In my opinion when it comes to floor paint, you get what you pay for. Also, the floor prep will make or break you so just plan on thorough prep.

Nice building!!!!

Got a couple questions about your lean-to.

What roof pitch is it?

What size and spacing are the rafters?

I'm trying to get ideas for adding a lean-to but not sure if I have enough roof pitch.

D KRAGER, the pitch on the lean is 3/12 which gives me a 7' high opening for the doors. I wish it was a bit more but it should be sufficient for most anything I put in there. By the way, the width of each opening is 8'. The spacing on the roof trusses is 24" on center and they are 2x8's.
I hope this helps. I can shoot a photo if you'd like.

Now that the 9x16 garage door is on and finally painted, the barn is for the most part done. We had some lights left over from our awning at work so I went ahead and put them up to see how they lit things up....hey they were free!! I put up 4 eight foot H.O. T12's and 4 six foot H.O. T12's and still need to track down a couple more six foot bulbs as the picture shows. They'll work for now, I just want to save some money for a good epoxy floor before I move anything in. Maybe next year I'll be able to afford insulation and drywall.
