30 X 42 LED Lights Spacing Recommendation

Would like recommendation with installing LED lights in my garage. I have a total of 32 outlets boxes with 5 on every other bottom cord of the truss except around the stairs going up to attic storage room. They're spaced 4ft from each side wall, down the center of each garage door, and center of the garage. I initially wanted to put them 2ft from each sidewall but they would interfere with the garage door horizontal track. any recommendation will be appreciated.

Missing critical info = ceiling height

For better response include link to fixture purchased.

For even better response include link to fixture IES file.

4800 lumens is way underpowered for a 16' ceiling if this space is being used for wrenching. Fine for storage/parking. Also, 84 lumens per watt is poor efficiency for an LED fixture.

See this post (link) for better fixture for your application (assuming wrenching is the goal).

Platonic Solid thanks for recommendation. How many PLT-90097 LED high bay lights and spacing would be best for wrenching.

12 fixtures. Fixture center to center spacing = 11'x 11.333' (fixtures 4' from adjacent wall to fixture center)

Target = 93fc @ 30" work plane
Yield = 105fc @ 30" work plane

Anyone considering mounting this fixture lower than 16ft should take advantage of the dimming feature.

Even at 16', the dimming feature may be desirable for non-commercial usage.

Note: PLT-90097 is 4000K, PLT-90098 is 5000K

178W is serious overkill, but doable with a dimmer. I suspect the PLT-90098 is DLC rated as PLTM125112. Suggest confirming with distributor.

Edit: Precision Lighting and Transformers (PLT) is a proprietary brand of 1000Bulbs.com

Why do you consider it over kill? my old barley 2 car garage had 24 48" T8 bulbs :shocking: It was so nice more than needed but.... seriously considered pulling them down before I moved.

Refer to post #7 above which uses qty.12 17,685 Lumen fixtures = 212,220 lm total.

You can't compare unspecified fluorescent light fixtures in a 2 car garage of unspecified size to a 30x42x16 using LED highbay fixtures other than to say Qty.12 178W PLT LED fixtures = ~280,000 lumens (yield ~140fc @ 30" work plane), Qty. 24 F32T8 bulbs = <72,000 lumens (subtract ballast factor, fixture losses, lamp age losses).

When those 24 F32T8 bulbs were new and assuming we're talking Qty.12 2-lamp no lens strip lights in a 24x24x8 space with good reflectance, then you might achieve 70fc @ workplane. Now imagine your claimed very bright garage is now twice as bright.

PlatonicSolid - do you have a recommended dimmer to use with the PLT-90097/90098 ? I will have five fixtures on each dimmer.

Thanks !

Attached are pictures of the PLT - 90098.

Quick review:

- Customer Service: Sales Rep called 30 minutes after I placed my order to confirm and provided contact info.

- Shipping: Didn't expect the lights to arrive so soon. Ordered Wednesday, arrived Saturday via FedEx.

- Packing: 13 Lights ordered in 3 boxes consisting of 5/5/3. Plenty of packing peanuts to prevent the lights from shifting while moving or damage.

- Construction: Overall lights are well made out of durable material and easy installation with hanging using chains. Lights are very light, I was able to climb scaffold with one under my arm. Weighs approx. 10lbs.

CONS:
Mountable: Wish they can be easily mounted between trusses by adding few screws. I will have to construct 1 x1 purlins to flush mount with ceiling.

Overall. very happy with price and product. I connected one light and was impress with the brightness of the light. 13 lights will definite light up this garage.

2 options:
1. Wire all dimming leads (violet & gray) to a discrete dimming only control such as this (link). Wire standard On/Off switches to power in whatever configuration you like.

2. Cooper Wiring Devices SF10P or DF10P or equiv. Max 1200W = 8 135W fixtures per switch/dimmer.

DTL504 - Thanks for the pics! The PLT-90098 spec sheet (link) states "Die cast aluminum housing" yet what I see looks like formed sheet aluminum or steel. Is anything die cast on this fixture or is this a literature error?

FYI - PLT-90098 is now out-of-stock until July.
I placed an order for (5) and they have let me know it’s on BackOrder and they cancelled my order.

I changed to the PLT-90097 4000K version which is in-stock.

They (1000bulbs) was very good about communicating and sending me quotes on alternatives. They had proposed going up to the 178W 23,318 lumen version but that would have been over-kill as pointed out in previous replies here.

DTL504 - I've had several conversations with 1000Bulbs about the PLT-90098 fixture. They have been impressively responsive. They instantly fixed the spec sheet to remove the "Die Cast Aluminum Housing" statement. When I asked about surface mounting the housing directly, I'm told it requires surface mounting brackets at $5.66 cost for set of 2. This makes me wonder how your installation progressed without surface mounting brackets.

Any other comments pro/con about this fixture?

Just finished my electrical rough-in inspection and haven't mounted the lights. Currently, I have two lights attached to joist with chain supplied. Definitely will purchase surface mounts brackets tomorrow. Thanks for the follow-up.

FYI - The $5.66 cost for set of 2 surface mounting brackets was based on a quote that included 60 fixtures. So it wouldn't surprise me if lower quantities are a little higher priced.

Just to piggyback on this conversation, I am in a very similar point in picking lighting. My garage is 30x40x14. How much does the lower ceiling affect the number of lights needed? Thanks!
