The USA will be relinquished to a bunch of lazy asses who sit around, live off hand-outs from the government, and pretend to be what they see on TV. Pretending that they are richer and more famous than they really are. Those of us here who are still alive then will likely be the only Americans who can still pick up a tool to fix something with it, or at least know what it's used for. Because even today those valuable skills are quickly dying out among younger middle class Americans. The whole idea of earning the American dream has been forgotten by todays generation.

HandyManny: You're describing what we already live in. Everyone coddles their kids and basically my generation and the current generation are a bunch of wussies(there are exceptions to the rules). No one teaches kids life is hard and with the BS on TV showing kids even a retard can be rich/famous for no reason.

We've gone to the extreme, in the wrong way, where everyone is winner and you have to watch out for people's feelings. No one learns basic life skills not to mention a trade.

Trades have been demonized as "lower" class and too much work. I personally am in awe at people who can fabricate things out of metal, wood, etc. Most of the stuff I watch on TV is how stuff is made.

I think the youth of america need a swift kick in the ***. They need to shut up, stop whining, and make something of themselves. I've been working in some capacity since I was 14(I'm 30 now). My first job was in a print shop. It was a lot of labor and grunt work but I liked it. When I left they hired another kid, they got rid of him after one summer because all he did was whine about it.

Life requires a work ethic and everyone needs to pull their weight. Life is more than cell phones, twitter, facebook, and the other **** out now. I think we should send kids to China for a summer to work in a sweat shop and see how bad it could be versus how bad they think it is now.

As a retired toolmaker/machinist I have seen all this all too well. We cannot compete in the manufacturing field, no one cares if you can read a blueprint, cut your own material, machine to it to a tolerance specified. The use of machine shop tools or its practices is no longer required. The pride of individual workmanship, the satisfaction of a job well done is no longer realized. We see the loss in manufacturing here in this country to China, we were once the hub of innovation, leading the world. 30 years from now I cannot even imagine where we will be, who will be left to know what to do with a boring bar, dividing head, or a torque wrench..........so sad.

most will have gone to the land fill or metal recycler.
the new tools will be made from plastic and will hold up better than the made in china stuff today. people will wonder how anyone was able to fix anything with that 'old' junk

snap on will be making tools in the US again in 30 years. they will have moved production to china, sales will drop and they will start to lose profit margin because their warranty rate will go through the roof. they will discover that as costs rise in china that is has actually become cheaper again to make them here in the US and they will break less often

China, India, etc currently offer two things; cheap decently educated workers, and relaxed environmental standards. Combine those with a disregard for all intellectual property rights, and a willingness for large foreign ownership and investment, and you get the cheap goods. Decently educated folks don't stay cheap, turn green within a generation, and start wanting protection for their own intellectual property, so I expect cheap production to move around the world as the workforce matures.

Robotics is also constantly improving, with the mechanized workforce being the real future.

The youth of America may be what you describe, but it's the parents who are mostly to blame for spoiling those kids with everything, especially giving them plenty of excuses to be the way they are today. Nothing will change until we stop giving them excuses for being the way they are and even show a better example ourselves. In the end it's also up to us to pass down these skills and trades to the younger generations. I still see some teens who show an interest in these things. They don't get more involved because they get discouraged from persuing this stuff, as if it's the last thing anyone should want to do. Just because a young man has an interest in leaning these skills doesn't mean that he nessesarily may want a career in it. That's okay. Mechanics skills, building/construction skills, plumbing skills, electrical skills, general repair and fabrication skills all serve to benefit you later in life even if you never take a job in the trades. There is nothing more satisfying that having the ability, know-how, and self sufficiency to fix your own repairs and troubles, and not rely on others to do it for you.

One more thing may happen 30 years from now. If all 80 million gun owners in this country don't unite, stand up and join the NRA, vote for politicians who respect the US Consitution and the rights of the people, we'll likely see the demise of the 2nd Amendment, or it will at least be severely infringed across the entire country.
