I'm planning a budget build of a 30 x 30 pole barn structure and need plenty of advice. The bid I got was $3500 for materials and construction. This includes poles, bands, trusses, insulation, metal sides and roof. I would have to take care of concrete floor, overhead and entry doors. I'm planning on using the building for my project recording studio and rehearsal with my band. The idea is that I would be able to use it for other purposes later on in life.

The advice I need....Is there a way to construct this as a two-story building or at the minimum have a storage loft? A link to similar projects would be appreciated. Also, cost saving measures and inerior finishing ideas are also appreciated.

Well, you would have to order it with an appropriate eve height and then put in footers and extra posts to transfer the second story to the soil. I am working on a 34x70 pole barn with a 20' eve height with provisions for a second level in the future. I my case the concrete and site prep cost is far higher than the building kit.

Also, I would put in the extra horizontal girt beams at the second level point before the skin goes on.

Hopefully you realize that until insulation and sheetrock or other wall coverings are installed, the accoustics inside the building will be HORRIBLE!!!

$3500 sounds low to me. How high are the sides in the quote?

I would get a few more bids....

Unless you are willing to have center posts a second floor or storage area will mean special trusses and a higher cost.
Does the storage area have to be over the full 30 x 30?
A 8 x 30 “balcony” along one wall will give you a lot of space for little money.
The weight you are going to put up there will have a lot to do with how you support it.

That sounds like a pretty good price for the basic shell.

Depending on the grade and amount of fill required, I would not be surprised to see that much again for a concrete floor.

Door cost will vary all over the map.
Size, style, amount of weather proofing all are concerns.

Does anyone have links to a two story pole barn? I know that the 'sound' won't be great, but that's okay for now. I would be willing to go with the 'special' trusses or floor joists. I am interested in knowing more about extra posts and horizontal girt beams. And the idea of a loft would also be an option I would consider. Anyone have any construction details?

The cost quote is for 8' walls and 4x4 posts. I had already decided to go with 6x6 and 10' walls. The cost of labor is cheap around here. The way I did my 30x30 garage behind the house was to use 6x6 post every 10' set 3'+/- into the ground with 2x6 rough cut banding, trusses 2'OC, 1x4 rough cut lathe, then all covered in metal. I've been happy with everything except the trusses. I see all kinds of room up there with very little access.

Hey,

I have heard about two story pole barns. Company is Conestoga Buildings out of Harrisonburg Virginia. I'm not sure if they are in your area, but it might be worth contacting them to see what they offer.
