30x34 Garage DIY Tons of Pics!

So its about time I posted this, I bought my first house 2 years ago at 23 and it came with 2 sheds, one 8x8 and a 12x12. I love building cars and it was always a dream of mine to have a lift in my own shop.

20151013_182105.jpg

I originally wanted a 30x40 but decided against it as I am single and limited funds. the 30x34 was still big enough for 3 bays and that suits me for right now especially in a "starter" house. So, as you have probably guessed I have not built anything like this before. Luckily my father used to have his contractors license years ago so I had him to help when he could.

I got all my materials from 84 Lumber in Raleigh which I would highly suggest no one ever uses again. Problem after problem with them and nothing but excuses and attitude. Not small problems either, one draft would have my wall height at 10ft then the next it was at 14. Materials were all jacked up, had to return 12 pieces of SmartSide paneling since a forklift damaged the whole tongue and groove while delivering and got nothing but attitude for it. I probably had over 100 calls to them in a 3 month period. the metal roof they delivered was completely incorrect, I could go on and on.

I started by myself and moved the 12x12 shed with the help of Pops Bobcat.

20160816_135129.jpg

I put two 4x4's underneath it and wrapped chains around the end and dragged it over to its new home.

20160817_191504.jpg

Left a nice groove in the yard!

20160817_191531.jpg

New home, almost leveled.

20160817_191552.jpg

I did the same thing with the other shed and started cutting down trees. All of this was August in Raleigh NC meaning 100 degree plus days.

Got some help from Dad cutting up and digging out the stumps.

My helpers removing every stick they find!

20160825_180642.jpg

Picked up a Bobcat Auger Attachment to dig all of my 24x48" holes. Luckily I had some help from Dad and my Beautiful Girlfriend (Points for me if she reads this ;) ). This took all weekend and still had to finish up 8 on my own Monday morning, damn Carolina clay.

20160909_153401.jpg

I don't have any pics of the actual holes, Tuesday the inspector came out and passed them so I threw all the 6x6's in. Man, they were heavy all alone! I also had to drill two holes in both directions 12 inches up and put in rebar in as a tie down. I did not fill my holes completely with concrete only the first 24in. Then I back-filled with a gravel sand mix and then poured my slab around all of them. This was done as a recommendation from the engineer to both save on concrete and also to help water drain around the pole. It also tied all the poles together.

20160918_171749_1.jpg

More help from Dad and the Girlfriend to set the poles.

20160918_171833.jpg

Broke the corner of my driveway :( .

20160918_171803.jpg

After cutting all the tops of the 6x6's we started on the top band. It was a pain, I had to notch in each pole per the Engineer.

20160923_190938.jpg

Top band done! The LVL's were even more of a pain as the notch was in the middle of the pole.

20160924_190828.jpg

This is where I realized I messed up. long story short, my Dad has a 4 bay shop. the only problem that we ever had was with the height of the garage door 7ft. I designed the building while I was overseas for 6 months. so naturally, I called my dad and asked the size of his doors. I was told they were 8ft wide and 7 ft tall. I ordered and had the engineer put in his plans both a 8x8 and 16x8 ft door. Once all the poles were up and cemented in concrete I realized he was WRONG. His doors are 9ft wide and 7 ft tall. That is honestly the only thing I regret with this building. Next time the doors will be at least 9ft and 18' wide. luckily the mirrors on my truck fold!

Anywho, I put a lot of the banding on during the week and had the concrete crew come out. this is the only thing I did not do myself. Finally looking like something!

20160927_092317.jpg

20160927_135126.jpg

The concrete truck broke a piece of the driveway but after it dried out it all blends pretty good.

20160927_150449.jpg

The following weekend, I got a couple buddies over and with the help of them and the usual's (Dad and Gf) we put the trusses up. I don't have any pics as I was riding in the Bobcat bucket holding them as we went up for the first 6. after that we put two ladders on each side and just carried them up ourselves. Again, this took all weekend.

20161017_181347.jpg

I then noticed a lot of mistakes with the trusses for Peak Truss Builders. I had about 9 trusses missing several plates. Can't make this stuff up people. QA came out and pretty much said sorry while they hit in a bunch of plates. and used all of my tools to do it as they didn't bring anything :headscrat .

Also, the building is 34ft long the first 20' has a traditional attic truss on a 6/12 pitch giving me over 8ft to the peak on the inside of the attic. The last 14' are Scissor trusses for the lift bay.

Just one truss.

20161017_080441.jpg

20161017_181359.jpg

After finishing up all the roof Perlins we started on the metal roof. I got some help with this as those sheets are pretty long. Super easy though and turned out great. I did put a vapor barrier up on each side, just in case because it will be heated and cooled.

20161107_143740_1.jpg

Also started on the SmartSide paneling for the exterior wall. this stuff is awesome. It has like a plastic layer that comes already primed. easy to put up and should last a long time! I used this because I wanted to match the house as close as I could.

20161107_143752.jpg

20161107_143755.jpg

Good portion of the paneling done.

20161108_170608.jpg

20161108_170344.jpg

20161108_170333.jpg

The inside loft. It is pretty big, about 12x20' of useable space at the lowest it is about 6ft high. The rest of the sides I will use for the AC/Heat system and storage for wood, pipes whatever..

20161108_170625_1.jpg

I then put the doors in before filling in the gables as I was tried of having to walk all across the yard to lock all the tools up in the shed. By this time It was starting to get in the 30's so it limited the work we could do. I know it seems like awhile but I had a lot of delays with 84 Lumber, numerous returns for the wrong stuff, plus normally one, two or three people working on it at a time. Also had to wait for various inspections and weather. I did work on it though every day I had off and some days before work for at least a solid 4 months. Now is a good time to mention at the time I worked permanent nights 4 days on 4 days off. With that schedule I would lose weekends for 4 weeks at a time and all my help if I was off during the week.

20170115_171929.jpg

Building and Trim all painted and up, this took about a week as I had to wait for the warmer days to paint. Also got the soffit done and the rake for the roof.

I then noticed every time it rained water would pool in front of the big door. I rented a concrete saw and got a drain to help. It works pretty good and doesn't look bad at all. The pic is of a mock up, I did cut the drain to fit the angle.

I orginally wanted the garage to have its own power for two reasons. One to have a bigger box and two the house meter is on the opposite side of the house and only 200amp. After I got the quote from the electric company plus learning I have to pay double the fees, street lights ect.. I decided to run a 100 amp sub panel my self. I rented a trencher, ran the wire under the house in conduit then 24 inches down all the way to the garage. Inspector came out, had a couple changes for me and boom POWER :rocker: plus a totally destroyed lawn lol

PASSED MY FINAL INSPECTION! :D

Right after I started running electric throughout the garage and got decently far

Enough to put in the garage door opener on the big door (since I have to change the small door to go up the truss) and some lights to work at night. I didnt want to put a tone up as they will just have to move once I go to put the ceiling up.

Picked up that husky box at Home Depot for $360, I STOLE IT!:bounce:

Brought my lift over and finally had it put up. a little earlier than I wanted but I needed it for the vette as the cam bolts backed out. Gave me an excuse to drop a fresh cam in though! :3gears:

Heat and A/C was bought and installed for FREE by a guy who owed me some interest for a loan. so far its a pretty nice system! I need to go home and take some current pics. I've had a lot going on so haven't done much to the garage just fixing vehicles.... :(

This is where I am at now! Let me know what you think, If you have any questions I can answer them there is not much I didnt do to this thing. Hopefully after fixing the boat i just picked up I will finish up the electric and get the insulation and inside walls up ASAP.

Picked up an 07 Bayliner for $2k might need a motor (taking it out this weekend to check) but its something I can do in a weekend and should have about 4k total in it after. other than that its immaculate! Just some fun for the summer!

AWESOME work!! ***** that you had trouble with 84 lumber and Peak trusses. Are you Tony? I saw your review on Google of them and the description sounds similar to what you described here.

Despite the failures, it looks like you got it done!!

Thank you! Yeah that was me. I do not think when you pay close to $2500 for trusses they should have the problems they had. especially when they had a whole extra month to make them. The "crew" I was referring to in my review was me with friends and my Father was the "contractor". He had his residential and commercial license so I know it was done right but they were so warped and poorly made it made the whole rest of the job a pain!

We got it done though!

It looks like you're not afraid of doing anything over there. I like your garage, it ***** that you had to deal with so many setbacks. I really like the trench drain you installed; though, I would like to see the 'finished product': those take a little work to get in place....

Tell us more about the vette: cam bolts backing out? Is that a common issue with those ones (...like the late C4s having Opti-spark issues)?

Had the GF send me this pic since she is home, Its not very clear but it was cut perfectly straight and has a good lip on it. It was actually really easy took me like an hour to cut out the concrete and install. I just picked up some concrete sealer/caulk last night. you can see how much of a difference it had to go down and that's actually level. I just picked up some concrete sealer/caulk last night. I am going to put it around the edge to make it look better this weekend. i will update with a good pic later. You can also see the grass starting to grow finally and the little chip of concrete that broke off the other day :(

About the vette, No it is not normal. the Harmonic Balancer wears out on all of them and needs to be replaced very early on. the car only has 60k on it and when I got it I immediately noticed the balancer wobbling. The cam bolts backed out shortly after me replacing it. personally i think the old pulley was causing a lot of vibration which loosened the bolts. When I put the new one on it was only a matter of time. luckily I caught it before it backed out completely or even hit the front cover. It's all rebuilt now though! New intake, Cam, Springs, Rods, Retainers, Seats and Locks. I put a set of Headers and full exhaust with electric cut-outs at the same time.

I also used some left over metal I had and made a roof last week for the shed to store my firewood. Luckily the store of dad had a wood splitter so about 3 days of straight splitting and boom done!

Next job is to build a ramp for the shed...thats where all the law equipment is going.

Also should have put this first, if you were wondering the house appraised for 132k when I bought it. The garage cost me 12k for everything including the concrete, electrical and HVAC. The house just currently appraised for 160k. That is without insulation and a finished interior.

You may want to rethink that wood storage location. My dad and I used to store stuff against our sheds like that and I have noticed the wall gets soft there since it never gets a change to dry out. Maybe the overhang will help.

I put a fresh coat of paint before I put it up. I'll replace the paneling in 20 years if it gets soft lol.

blown90camaro, your garage has come up a treat, well done.

Thanks, starting to see the light!

That's a great looking building ! Nice work ! That loft is a very cool feature as well. If I had that my vette parts room would epic.

Thanks, I hear you! I'm planning on putting shelves one one side upstairs then maybe a couch and pool table. The back wall is going to have a full length bench and shelves all the way down so plenty of storage.

I've been away for awhile!

Been pretty busy lately with just normal life but I had some time to make some pretty significant progress on the garage. I finished the rest of the wiring, total of 49 plugs lol. Might be over kill but half of those are lights and I didn't want to have to have many cords.

Got some 2x6's and stared putting them horizontally between the post to stud out the walls for the insulation and plywood. The lift has many uses!

imagejpeg_2_zps1tz95ve8.jpg

imagejpeg_zpsxdgp9k3s.jpg

Finally ordered all the insulation, got R19 for the walls and R30 for the ceiling. Should be plenty where I am!

I know the garage is a mess, didn't have anywhere else to put everything so just pushed it in the middle!

20170426_175543_zpstifqixjz.jpg

Coming along nicely, taking more time than I thought as always!

20170426_175530_zpscwp9d8uq.jpg

Some of the R30 done...

20170502_182921_zpsjbzc2u3q.jpg

Insulation in!!

received_10158604264825285_zpsheb60ksc.jpg

So after several days of debating, I decided on some 3/8 plywood for the interior. I didn't want drywall as I really use the garage plus I wanted to be able to just hang something anywhere easily. 70 sheets $800 later...

20170502_182910_zpsppvxzv7z.jpg

Did I mention the 49 plugs I have to cut around :lol_hitti

20170503_133224_zps4vn0vnco.jpg

Halfway??

Plywood Done!!! Also not sure if you noticed before but the single garage door used to be at a traditional 90degree open. I cut the track to follow the ceiling pitch and called the distributor to get new springs/drums. With some dumb luck he said the springs I currently had were what he would recommend. I was told to go one rotation on each and test it out, balanced out perfectly!

20170510_180857_zpsabuwbs1d.jpg

20170510_180909_zpsqn63uh0j.jpg

All the lights/openers installed.

20170512_143343_zpsepqlilhn.jpg

20170512_143356_zpsltdvjvu0.jpg

That's where I am now. Next steps are to make the door for the loft and get that closed off, trim work, shelves and air compressor install. Even as it is right now, it really does a great job keeping the cold in. I hate working in the heat so really glad it's all done!

Let me know what you think, my plan is to matte polyurethane the walls. I like the wood look and do not feel like mudding or caulking the grooves to paint it white. I think it looks pretty good the way it is and after the polyurethane I'll have banners and tons of other stuff on the walls anyways. Any other suggestions I might be missing?

P.s. typed this on my phone at 3am. Please excuse any typos!

not sure about the polyurethane on the walls. Painting it would brighten it and reflect the lighting better
Nice job on the garage for a great price

I would agree but I have like 30 T8 lights. As it is right now I have 15 on one switch and 15 on the other and I rarely have to use both. The only reason why I don't want to paint it is because it will never look smooth unless it get a ton of filler/sanding...the reason why I'd like to do the matte poly is so any fingerprints/grease marks will wipe off.

So I have been slacking! Haven't really done much on the garage (busy the last weekends) but finally got the inside of the shed all cleaned up and organized and decided to make a ramp for the lawn mower.

I'll be back soon with the shelves done and compressor installed in the shop!

Are you worried about warping with the 3/8" plywood? What spacing is it supported on?
I like the look a lot but figured I would need 1/2"

Good job on the DIY garage. Can you tell more about the lift. What is the distance from the finished wall to the post, it looks tight. With the car on the lift how much room do you have to pull wheels and possibly an axel shaft. I have a tight spot to put a two post lift with about 6" off the wall.

very nice job. i think it looks great with the colors you chose also.

Thanks I appreciate it!

no the 3/8 is perfectly straight, its really not as thin as you think. The perlins I put in are on 24in centers.

I have swapped 3 motors so far 2 clutches and a boat motor and have plenty of room. When a car is on the lift there is about 4 ft from the car to that wall.

Very nice build man!

Thanks!

So I have done a TON of work and got all of the walls sealed, shelves up, second bench made, peg board put in and installed my air compressor with a Rapidair Kit. The kit was great took me a couple of hours for both hose reels and 2 ports on each bench.

Also the engine in the pic is from a 2014 Hyundai Veloster turbo 41k miles I grabbed for $5k got a $1500 motor for and should be able to sell for close to $13k. Between the boat and this car the shop already payed its-self off!

First shelf up

All the shelves done. I like the look of the chain it worked good, very easy, super strong!

Compressor in the corner, fits good and really is a lot quieter than I thought it would be. 80 gallon tank, 7.5 hp for the win!

That's pretty much it for now. Last thing I need to do is build some doors for the upstairs loft and put in an attic ladder. even with the massive opening the garage cools down super fast, 75 feels cold when its 90 plus outside!

Looks like most of the pics are gone from the initial build. At least, I can't see them on my computer...

What did you do for a/c?

Would love to see the pics as well. Interested in your build!

Pics are Fixed! I could kill Photobucket. That took forever!

Looks really good. Glad to hear the ac is working out for you.

the A/C works great. I have a new Goodman A/C Heat pump traditional split unit and it is amazing, it barely runs even with the massive hole for the loft. I am building some doors for that Tuesday though with insulation on the back to make it even better.

That's an understatement. The lift has already made me over 14k of pure profit for maybe a total of 7hrs of work. Wouldn't have touched those projects if I didn't have it!

quick update, I was tired of having to grab bottles off the shelf so I grabbed a metal cabinet for $50 fits perfectly in between the doors.

Also, I wanted to fill in the gravel around the shop so I got two loads and spread it out last weekend. need to get some sand to level out my edgers but it looks alot better!

Lastly, had some gutters installed. no more shower in front of the door! As you can see, fighting a losing battle with the grass. need to grab some grass killer for the driveway and more seed this fall.

Driveway will be pressure washed this weekend and that's about the end on this one! at least for now!

Get you post some photos of the inside pre and post concrete? I'm working plans on my diy pole shop but everyone says NO to doing concrete after the building is up.

Did you put any rock down before concrete?

Any movement or settling?

There are tons of photos of the concrete, look on page one, I didn't put the building up then concrete. The way my engineer wanted it was each pole had a 4' by 24" hole. Then I put two pieces of 24in rebar making an X through the pole 6 inches from the bottom. Then back fill each hole with 12in of concrete. After that, back fill with gravel all the way to the top. Then I wrapped the poles with 2 2x6 at the floor level filled with abc (crush and run) then poured the slab. You should be able to see most of this on page one. the concrete was done way before the roof was even on.. No movement or settling.
