Hey Guys,

So after about doing almost a year and a half of research on TGJ and figuring out exactly what I want the shop is coming along. Started middle of may but just finally had the floor poured last Monday, took the week off work and got a lot done on the shop thanks to beer, my friends and more beer. Just working on putting up the steel right now for the roof and have a couple questions and how im going to transition my lean too from my main truss roof. Im going to attach a bunch of the build pics in this post but the main answer im trying to get is how I will do the lean too overhang or build out to match the existing ladder overhang on the main building trusses. Some more info, its a 4/12 pitch roof, 12 foot high walls and I plan on keeping the pitch the same and have the rafters I cut transition down to 8 feet in height from the 12 on the main walls, which will give me the 12 feet of horizontal space in the lean too itself. I am using 2x10 for rafters and have no issue on how to tie them in, going to just cut in birds mouth and sister each one up to trusses. The thing im trying to figure out is how to continuously run the fascia and soffit from peak of my main roof down to the lean too beam, there will be a first and last 2x10 rafter at the gable ends of the building but framing the 20" out off of that to meet up with my ladder from the trusses is the question. I live in central Ontario on the lake so our snow load is pretty good in the winters, I hope I didn't make my question to confusing, thanks for the help guys.

I would think you'd have to extend your beam that sits on your post out so that it is even with the end of your main roof. I would then assume you'd have to basically treat the edge as if it was another rafter. I'd probably sister in a board for at least 4 feet on the truss side and new Facia/Rafter side (8 ft board total minimum) w/ plenty of nails (not screws - this is a shear load.)

What is your truss spacing? If it's more than 24", I'd almost be worried the 2x10 wouldn't be enough. Not sure what your snow load is (EDIT: I found 52 lbs/sq ft w/ a quick search), but I looked at the 60 lb live load: https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/horizontal-roof-rafter-span-d_1484.html

Don't trust me, free advice is worth what you paid for it:)
