Looking good! It's easy to get a one-track mind while framing. I made a couple mistakes while framing as well and ended up have to buy a few longer boards to replace the mistaken cuts. Oh well, plenty of extras for the shelving I'll be needing soon.

Thanks guys. I haven't gotten anything done this week because of work. I do have a question though. I have seen the wall framing done both before the header beam is installed or after depending on the mood of the crew perhaps? I currently do not have tall enough ladder(s) to be able to hang the header beams before doing the lower wall girts so I was thinking about building from the bottom up.

Scaffolding is super handy if you have the option. I bought mine well used off of Craig's List and use it all the time. I buy stuff like that used so I can take my time and always have the option of selling when I'm done for the same money.

Unfortunately buying a bunch of scaffolding (new or used) is not in the budget for this build. I have spent a lot of time trying to think of ways to hang the header beam before the wall girts and given my budget restrictions I have come up with nothing; looks like I will be building from the bottom up.

So I got a few rows of side girts put up today. It was slow going with just me but it is progress and I will take what I can get. I made a couple of jigs which I just screwed into the posts to give me the right spacing off the girt below it. This way I don't have to waste time re-measuring each section I put up.

Today I got three more rows of 2x4 girts up. My wife came out and helped with the last row since it was at the 10 feet mark amd climbing up and down was getting a little rediculous. I also got about half of the untreated 2x10 skirt boards changed out for treated boards. I also stopped by Home Depot today for a belt clip to put on my Dewalt impact driver. Unfortunately they don't sell the driver I have anymore but the guy I talked to was pretty cool about it. He pulled a belt clip off a newer model on display and just gave it to me.

Not much has happened due to work again. Today my better half and primary assistant was sick but I still wanted to try to get something done so I hung the side entry door. After I got the door hung I started putting the door knob together and that is when I found out the holes for the latch and knob were not drilled correctly. The hole for the knob was drilled too far towards the center of the door....yay for me.

i can't really tell from the pic, but they do make two common different lock setbacks, i believe 23/8 and 23/4, try getting a lock with 23/4 and see if it works. a
lot of locks are convertible from one to the other

If you look real close at the first pic you can see the label for the door knob backset says 2 3/4. Try extending it to the furthest out setting.

Thank you very much. As soon as I read your reply I went out and sure enough it is a dual position latch. Ya learn something new every day. Again, thank you.

Had a buddy come over today and we got another row of girts up and hung the inner/outer garage door header.

On another slightly frustrating note a couple of my posts started to warp towards the top. We used a ratchet strap to pull it back and then nailed the girt in place to hold it.

Got quite a bit of work done this weekend. I invited some of my coworkers over and we had a working get together; my wife cooked up some good food while we built some more of my shop.

I rented a towable boom lift to help with lifting the heavier items. We got the last row of girts hung as well as the header beams for the trusses. Late last night we got the rear gable truss installed and secured to the posts.

Today a couple of them came back to help some more. We got the front gable truss installed and plans were to get all the trusses up but it just got too windy and unsafe to be lifting trusses. I changed directions and worked on the less cumbersome tasks. I got the tops of the posts cut flush with the header beams, cut the gable posts flush with those trusses, and finished out the garage door header.

So is it me or is my build too boring? Nobody besides me has posted in here since April 24....

In other news my wife and I got the eave facia and a few rows of purlins up on the west side of the roof.

Bill,
Your not boring me. I admire that you are doing the whole build yourself. When I build my shop,I expect to do most of the inside work myself. God bless.

Jon,

Thanks for the kind words. I started looking around for someone that could install the roof metal for a decent price. I have an unexpected trip to Afghanistan coming up and with the excellerated timeline I think I might have bitten off more than I can chew now.

I took off from this week to try and make some decent progress on the shop...and we did. I am proud to say that with all the help from friends and my wonderful wife we are at 99.75% complete on the structural framing. The only thing left to do is the facia board along the east side eaves and framing for the 6 windows. I am thinking about leaving the windows out for now just so I can get everything dried in before I leave for Afghanistan.

The problem I have now is figuring out how to get the metal panels up to the roof to put on without any equipment. We spent about $1000 for a boom lift rental which helped out imensley with everything above the header beams but now we don't have the funds left to get more equipment.

I used motorcycle straps to roll and hold my roof panels into a "U" shape, then they can be carried up a ladder without kinking them.

yea...Throw a rope over the building. Make a half assed ramp out of 2 x 6's going from ground to roof. If you have 2 people...You could use your extension ladder with one person pulling and the other guiding and pushing as the tin goes up.
Get some C clamps and for starters..clamp about 4 sheets of tin together....All stacked flush together. (You may be able to move more than 4 at a time...Just start with 4 IMO)
You should just need 2 c-clamps towards the front of the tin...Just to keep everything together and the rope from slipping.
Use some little wooden blocks under the c-clamps as to not damage the roofing. Then loop a sling / rope around and to the clamps...and pull it up the ramps with the rope you have thrown over the building. Smaller clamps are better than huge clamps since they are less likely to snag on **** as you are moving the tin up the ramps.
Sounds complicated...But once you get moving with it...It'll be a breeze IMO.

It wouldn't hurt to get yourself a harness also so you don't go tumbling off while working on the roof. Those harnesses always show up on Craigslist.

I actually went and bought a harness with anchor and life line last weekend when I was doing the purlins. My eave height is 16 feet from the concrete and even more from grade since the dirt slopes away at a fairly steep angle at some points.

As far as building a ramp, I had thought about that but since the building is so tall it would have to be one hell of a ramp set up.

Good sized shop- keep it up!

I have a fondness for your area- my grandparents and great-grandparents on both sides owned much of the land that is now covered by Stillhouse Hollow. My dad's grandparents' house remained at the bottom of the lake when it filled up, and my granddad's house is still standing on the south end of the bridge. He was only left with 10 acres after the lake went in, but I have very fond memories walking down and putting out a trotline. Oh, and I shot my first (and only) white tail when I was 14 right there. Pirtle Dr. is named for my family, as is Jewel Ln- my great-grandmother's name. I'll end up at Cedar Knob Cemetery when my time comes.

Enjoy Texas, you never know when you might have to leave!!

We have been here a little over three years now and we love it. We moved here from Ft. Lewis, WA and it is so much better down here. Once I get out of the Army we plan to stay.

Have you looked into scaffolding? When I put up my 30x40 I rented three stages, a walk board, and a set of casters. Set it up on the slab and pulled up my roofing panels from the top individually. I was working alone so every sheet required a trip up and down but that was just good PT.

Unfortunately we don't have any funds left for rental equipment; we spent about $1000 total renting a boom lift already.

So I have come to a stand still. Due to an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan I no longer have enough time to finish the shop as a DIY project. I was using buddies from work for helpers on the weekends but I can't ask them to take mlre time away from their families before we leave to work on my shop.

That being said, doe anyone know a good contractor in central Texas? All that is left is the outside skin. I just don't have much cash left so I need a decent price.

Bill,

Looks good so far I hope you saved some money doing the framing yourself. I just had a 24x50 shop put up and the guys did it in 2 days!! all metal building.

I would like to think I have saved at least some. With some of the estimates I've gotten for just putting the skin on I would hate to see what the charge would be for erecting the entire building.

I still have a couple months before I leave but with all the training that is going on now I just won't have enough time to finish it. I have called damn near every person/company I can find that does this kind of work. The ones that can/will do it want a fortune and I just don't have the cash for that. We had been planning a trip to Disney World before I leave but canceled it in order to get the shop done.

So I finally found a guy that will finish out my shop for a decent price. He generally does red iron buildings but since the framing of the pole barn is done he is ok just putting the tin on. He is also going to frame out the windows for me which wasn't priced with any of the other folks I've talked to since all their prices were so much higher. He is finishing up his current build and should be starting mine on Wednesday next week.

My neighbor reached out to some of her friends and found this guy for me. I am really excited to have found someone willing to finish my shop at a decent price.

Today was a good day. There was some good progress made but I don't think it is going as fast as he had planned mostly because it is pretty windy and hot as hell. Here are a couple pictures of what got done today.

So the crew has "finished" putting on the metal. I guess ya get what ya pay for in the end. I understand my framing was not 100% square but that was known when the guy started. Instead of trimming the pieces that didn't fit right he just left them to stick out. He also didn't use the correct trim at the top of the wall and soffit area (he used rat guard there). The screws don't line up around the building and he has screw holes that missed the boards on the roof (meaning leaks in the future). He also messed up the cut on the very last piece of corner trim and instead of offering a solution he just said he messed up. All in all the guy had great references and a great price, but I got far from a great product. Luckily I havn't paid him yet. I sent him a message (so everything is documented) informing him of the roof issues which is my biggest concern at the moment.

Any resolve?
Not really. I went through the building and wrote out a list of everything they messed up on that was totally in their control. Once I had that list I subtracted materials cost plus labor from his oroginal bid and that is what I paid them. His original bod was $2350 and I paid just over $1k.

I am working on getting a ladder big enough so I can get up on the roof to check all the holes that he says he put caulking in. Also, I am trying to find someone to come out and fix what he messed up. So if anyone knows someone in the central Texas area that does pole barns or metal buildings please let me know.

Man I wish I had seen this earlier. The crew that put up my building (everything but concrete) charges I think $1.50 per sq ft to do posts, frame and hang metal. They could've gotten you done in two days.

It's looking great and you have something to be proud of!

billgreenwood, First I want to thank you for your service for our country ! And congrats on your building, Sorry to see that the contractor messed up so bad. A lot of people just don't take pride in there work anymore ( just want to get paid ) It is getting very hard to find good help in todays world, I hope everything works out for you in the end. My building gets started tomorrow morning 8/1/16 and I can't wait for it to be done, Wish I could have done it myself but I had open heart surgery 2 and a half years ago and I just can't do things like I use to. Anyway just wanted to say your building looks great, Stay safe and god speed coming home from Afghanistan. Ken.......

I do need to get some things fixed still, where were they out of? There aren't many crews that do this stuff around my area so the travel costs for someone to come do it drives the final pruce way up.
