30x40 strict budget build in NJ

Here is what I got accomplished today. It was still very muddy because of all the snow that melted. Instead of running at 2600 rpms lowered it to 1800 rpm to limit my wheelspin. I was able to tow two old vehicles threw the mud with this new technique.

Here my new plan. I have smoothed the groung out enought to construct the pole barn. I am going to get a triaxle of crushed concrete delivered next week for a base for the pole barn. The mussy arears have been smoothed very well and I was even able to grade the drieway and was able ti pitch it for water run off as well.

Here is a picture of me removing stumps. We did all this in pourng rain by the way.

The excavator was a rental. it was rather small but was very heavy so it made removing the stups easy. The rental company never wrote down the hours they delivered the machine with so we were able to use more then the alotted hours.


Here is what I accomplished by myself in the rain today. I work very long hours at work and I am leaving for indaina in the morning(towing my brothers show truck to get custom painted) so I had no choice but to play in the mud today. I got alot accomplished because I made my tenants who live on the property clean up all the **** they have accumilated over the years. I then smoothed the muddy area all with my front end loader.

Thanks guys, I really want a rear box blade but I am waiting to fine a heavy duty used one forsale instead of buying the lighter duty new one. Any comments feel free to ask. Not to bad considereing I only have 65 hours on my tractor.

Here is what we did today. I am on a strick budget since the motor in my truck is being rebuilt and diesel work is very expensive. We started setting poles around 9:30 this morning. We had a total crew of 5 people who are construction workers friends who am making work for food only.

The kit was missng 2 2x12 so we were not able get the trusses set today. We were only able to but the top two lairs of purling because the concrete wasnt dry yet so we will come back and hopefully finish the wood and most of the metal.

I am running low on funds so I do not know when I will be able to get the concrete floor put in. I can say that from start to finish I did everything from clearing the lot to building the garage. Thanks god I know friends who are willing to work for food and I can make them work very long hours hahah.

Looks real good so far. Please post more photos as you progress. I am building a pole garage 30x36x10 as soon as the weather breaks. A "kit" from Menards. If I could do it again, I'd buy each piece one at a time instead. Budget? Me too. But I think I can do it all for about $9000. $6400 to Menards with insulated 10x9 doors. $1500 concrete (5" slab). The rest for electrical, heat and plumbing. A LOT of friends helping with labor. You actually give them food? With me, free water.

Well there was only three of us for day two. A forth person showed up around 1pm. We got 6 of the 11 trusses set. The doubled header was only supposed to be held with nails. I did not like this so I bought 32 1/2 by 10 foot carriage bolts.


We got all of the wall perlins on. We measure all the roof purlins and maked them along with the trusses. This took a long time but saved alot of effort when we were nailing up the trusses. We can get the next five trusses up n two hours since we developed a rthym so to speak. We also got all of the diaganal bracing up and nailed in. Barns very secure now. Here is some more pictures.

We shoudl be able to move pretty quick with the metal once we get all the starter strip ready. Hopefully going to have 2 people working on the roof and two people working on the walls. We still got to figure out the slider hardware but its good progress for two days. Cant wait to get it done

My budget is 10k for the barn installed with electric and the concrete floor. Barn cost arond 7k for the kit. 500 to rent the excavot for the weekend. Concrete should be 2k for 20 yards with fiber. I have no clue as to the electric costs because I am about 175 feet from the road. got 1/4 insulation for under the roof to help with the weeping of the roof so the water dont go everywhere. I got to see how much for them to put a meter and such in since its a rental property. Hopeing to have it done by next weekend so I can start grading. Heating and insulation are going to have to wait until my bank account recovers. Prolly next fall for that.


Forgot to add in one triaxle of crushed concrete is 300 buck for under the slab. Hopefully my trucks motor will be done so I can stop using my 2009 ford fusion rental( red car in the wide shot from the street) car as a pick up truck. put 4500 hard miles on it and I got it stuck at the job site once already lol

I own the house and the 30 acres. They rent the house and I use the rest of the property for my use. I need a second meter for my agrage because the tenants pay their own utilities and I am sure they will not want to pay for my garage. No renting for me; this property is about 10 min from my real house.

Quick electrical question for you guys.

Do you know if the electric company will come out and hook up a second meter for the garage. People around here are saying the electric company will do it for free but you have to have a liscensed elctrician hook it up the the breaker box. Any truth to this? If they do this for free I will be so happy.

Just planning for the future.

up here in canada, if you want to upgrade your service u have to bring in a licensed inspector look over the whole house so everything must be to code, then the power company will charge you for the meter and labour to install the new meter, however apparently a electrician can but the power company must hook it up. get a actual 2nd service to your shop because if your home has only 100amp service then you run a line to your shop from your house and use power from the home you are backing yourself into a corner, but if u want 100amp in the shop then get a separate service run to your shop, so you will prolly need to buy and install a pole or 2 up in bc i was quoted $2000 just to upgrade my service from 100a to 200a and thats no poles nothing just them coming in from what i can tell put in a 200a breaker lol . food for thought

where did you get the kit for the materials? Did that include all the metal?

I got the barn from diypolebarn.com. That includes all screws,metal,even the concrete to set the poles. It came with 2 bags per pole but I upped it to three per pole as cheap insurance.

They did not give me 2x12 with the kit. I called them and they are sending me a check for the material. So far great company. I was not comfortable paying for the barn upfront so they let me give them half as a deposit and half on delivery. 10000 cheaper than the quotes I got from local companies.


The garage is loacted in cape may county. Right near ocean city and such

yea I planned on it. I am currently remodeling my rela house which is literally down to the studs. I worked 55 last week at my real job. 18 hours on the barn and 6 hours on my real house. Im just beat lol and I have to wait for normal hours to call. I am hoping they dont have a clause n their policy since this is a second meter and a garage that they dont provide the meter and such. Oh well its a cost which I have to pay because what good is a garage with no electricity

You might look into a gill instead of the box blade. They don't have the exact same purpose, but i think gill is more versatile. It is so easy to grade with gill, imo.

No updates. I had kidney stones; whch really freakign hurt this weekend. Spent the morning in the hospital then we got 6 inches of snow. Needless to say I did not do anything. Hopefully this week

Finished all the framng today. It really took shape. We also finished all the fashia but I never took a picture of it. We did this in about 4 inches of snow. It was really cold too. High today was 30 degrees. Heres the pictures.

little update from today. Today 4 people worked the afternoon on it. We got to work slightly after lunch. We got all the facia and two walls completely done. Hope to get the other 2 walls along with the door done tommorow.

Well we busted our butts today to get the roof done. We are supposed to receive 12+ inhces of snow starting tommorow afternoon. We got all the trim for the front and back walls as well as most of the door built. We got the roof completely done in preporation of the snow. My god is that roof slippery. The melting snow make it an ice rink on there. It was especially hard without being able to see the perlins with the insulation under the roof metal but on top of the roof perlins. I bought 32 1/2 by 10 foot carriage bolts.

10 inches long lol. I didnt techincally need them but I figure it was 60 dolllars worth of insurance. It is nailed with 3.5 inch galvanized framing nails along with the carriage bolts. Two cariage bolts per post except for where the 2x12 were peiced; then each post had 4 there.


Yea My friends are real good guys. They are well feed and plenty to drink. I am gonna buy each one of them something for the help as well. Hopefully we can finish 95 percent of it today. Hoping for the front and backwalls along with the slider to be done today. Some odds and ends like trim and such wont eb done but it should be dried in. I am very excited.

heres a little update

sorry I forgot to update this site. I have to busy building the garage.

never did buy the box blade. I am going to be buying the box blade but erecting the garage was more important. Everything was done with the front end loader because thats all I had. My famly and a few friends built the garage. The grade is just a rough grade. recently went and built up the area around the garage to keep the water out. Have been slacking with taking pictures. Heres some I have

This is where stuff starts to get ugly. We got over 2 feet of snow and I didnt have enough fill to slope the ground away from the garage. This caused all the melting snow to turn my garage to a mud pit. I recently re graded it real quick to keep the water out. I then scouped out all the mud in preperation for the crushed concrete base I am going to be truck in.

I also got the new motor in my truck so Im excited to have it back so heres a picture of my truck.

Also we just got back from a car show and my brother took first in his class and best paint overall. We built this truck in the old garage from bone stock. We have a ton of time and effort in this baby. Towed it there wth my f250 diesel

not really. We still have to dig deeper and pour the slab. Entire property still has to be graded. Slab should but right up against the board and extend the perimeter of the building a foot.
