That pool looks great. But the clock is ticking... How's the shop coming???

Jeff...Thanks for getting me back on topic and on task! Yesterday was a good late night in the shop and I got much of the room that was our master bedroom cleaned out and organized. I have a desk/credenza in there that I'm selling, a few items to donate and a give away. It needs to be primed and painted with the rest of the shop, so I'm getting it cleaned out and ready. I got the fan/light contraption replaced in the bathroom and all the wiring in there tidied up and added a light by the closet. The AC unit was installed, but not hooked up to electricity yet:

I wish i'd been a little more involved in planning the ductwork as it killed a lot of storage space. I have some ideas already to rearrange it slightly. It will be fine though....

Well, it looks like you are going to have even less time on your hands to work on/in the shop. Now you have to factor in travel time and wait time for the kids' swimming lessons, pool party prep, and of course, the many hours of maintenance that having a pool requires. Oh, and don't forget to factor in the time spent at the inevitable swim team meets and the daily early morning practices. :willy_nil

Considering all of the above time commitments you are facing, perhaps you should just forget about working in the shop for the foreseeable future; just lease it out to some bachelor wrencher to use while you are lounging about your pool.

Ok...A little more progress:

I got the room cleaned that was originally our master bedroom and then was an office for a few years when I worked for myself. I still need to pull the carpet up, prime and paint. Smoke odor isn't too bad, but I want to get rid of it completely. I will have some excercise equipment in here and I may put the air hockey table in here as well:

This area was the original home to our washer/dryer. Planning a 2 bowl stainless free standing sink here. The door to the left was badly damaged, is on the north side of the shop and always leaked. It will go away. The wood to the right is covering up a 3X3 window. It will be replaced with a patio door to the back yard.

It's probably too late, but could I suggest putting a washer & dryer there to keep your oily rags clean? One of those stacked apartment units would be ideal in my opinion and is something I'm going to hopefully do when I get to build my shop for this very reason.

Good suggestion.

SIL, with the smoke smell...we had a family property that had renter induced cat pee damage. Sherwin Williams recommend a paint that did a great job sealing out/in/whatever odor...FYI.

It's definitely not too late, as I don't have that wall covered up yet so the plumber can do the outdoor shower connections. I really like that idea...not only for the oily rags, but for pool towels also. With the setup I've got right now, I have about a 16" gap between the wall to the left and the sink, so the sink could be moved easily enough to make room and water/drain/electrical connections would be easy enough. I was planning on hanging brooms, mops, dust pan, etc... to the left of the sink, but I like your idea....I'll give that some thought and run it by the wife. I'm off to research apartment washer/dryers.....

Thanks for posting!

Shaun, I thought you were going to say it would be a good spot for a dishwasher!

We've got a good local SW...Do you recall what they recommended? Was it a primer or type of paint? I was planning on putting KILZ over everything including what is already painted in the former bedroom/office/bath area.

SIL,

Don't remember, it was 5 years ago, but we told the guy our issue and he had a recommendation that we blindly followed...all the porous surfaces were cleaned, painted, or refinished. I will ask Dad to see if he remembers...obviously we will never forget the smell...wow, that was something.

Been a little while since I posted project pics....Busy at work and finishing up baseball regualr season. Progress has been made though! I went on a scavenger hunt on the farm and found a pile of old barn tin. Turned it into the ceiling for the back (hangout) part of the shop:

View media item 20201
I had to do it in four sections as the pieces weren't that long. Shorter pieces made the installation easier and my 12 year old son helped with the slightly longer middle sections. After that was up, I textured the upper wall with drywall mud and gave it kind of a plaster effect:

View media item 20202
I'm going do a much lighter coat of texture on the walls on the front half of the shop:

More to come.....including pool updates.

A little more shop progress. I got the interior room and bathroom painted over the weekend. I ended up using Kilz oil-based primer made specifically for covering stains and odors. My wife and daughter pitched in and we knocked it all out pretty quick. The primer made the finish paint coat go down nicely too. Next step in there is to clean the exposed wood wainscoat with a water/bleach solution, sand and seal. Then rip out and replace the carpet. Here's a couple of pics:

I pulled out the old particle board medicine cabinet and replaced it with an antique oak/beveled glass mirror from my grandmother. I need to come up with a creative light to put above it....ideas?

And as promised...A few pool update pics. The guys doing the rock work are definitely earning thier money! Doing a fantastic job and there is whole lot more work involved in a "dry stack" effect wall than I imagined. Nearly every rock that's a part of the wall was cut, chipped, shaped or somehow modified. They ended up with a large pile of rock chips all along the wall from all the fitting....I'm really pleased with it so far:

Plumbing connections for the outdoor shower and icemaker were installed today as well as the footer for the outdoor kitchen and rock wall that will be up against the shop from the patio doors to the end of the building. Should see some more progress this week and with the plumbing connections finished, that's one more section of wall I can finish on the inside.

More to come!

In some parts of FL, the water table is so close to the surface that the external water pressure can actually "pop" an unfilled concrete pool shell out of the ground. Is that a risk there? For ours during initial build and the recent reno, the empty pool filled up about 2-3 feet from water coming up through the bottom drain plug. The pool builder said it's always a tense time when they have to drain the pool completely to put the final finish on.

Its looking great. Looking forward to getting that pool party invitation in the mail any day now. :)

Wow...I sure hope that's not a risk here...I haven't heard anyone mention it, so I'm going to pretend I didn't read this:scared: When our house was built, they drilled 48 pier holes under the foundation. On the east end they did hit water, but it was about 10-12 feet down. I would say we've been drier than normal the last several years, so I'm going to say we're proabably ok. After the pool is done, I"ll ask the builder if he's ever had that happen around here.

Thanks for something else to worry about:beer:

Be careful...That invitation to the "party" might be a work day in disguise!

I have made some progress on the inside as well....All the inside plumbing connections have been made for the outdoor shower and I pulled a temporary wire to use as a pull rope for the hot water heater. These two things were keeping me from closing up the wall. Since they're done I was able to put up the rest of the wall board and put up some beadboard and a little paint:

Front half of the shop is primed and a complete mess! Paint scheme is still being debated. I'll try to photograph some of the possibilities and throw it out there for discussion!

Nice progress on the shop and pool area. You will like that outdoor kitchen area. Any plans for a shade structure? I love the tin ceiling panels. All the drywall joints in my ceiling are cracked and I have been thinking of my options. You've added another one to the list.

As shopnut said, if not done properly, high water tables can create problems with empty pools. 'Done properly' being the key words. When we had our pool refinished, the relief valve in the drain was left open, allowing the water table to come into the pool about 12-18" to equalize pressure. You don't seem to have the problem we do if your water table is 10-12' down, or more.

As for your question on the vanity light, an antique mirror needs a vintage looking light. Something along this idea...

When we had our pool put in in Houston they left a hole in the bottom of the gunite. When the came to plaster it they filled it with a bag of cement then plaster. I bet thats what they are doing with yours. You should never need to drain the pool, but if you do they should drill a hole in the bottom if they do. The guys above are right the pool will float, it does not take but a couple of inches of water under it to do that. lemon that pool is giving me ideas for ours. W ehope to get going on i this winter. I am hoping to contract it myself. Keep us posted on the party!

I've seen a few times you have talked about your shop burning before onthe the forum. About a month ago, I stumbled onto your thread and never got to finish reading about it. I finished it this morning. I must say it's a very nice build and great addition to your home and complimented by an awesome pool area in process.

Any future plans to replace the metal on the back of the shop to match the house or pool area ?

Man, that's going to be one nice entertainment complex when you are finished. The stonework looks great.

(And you should know by now that "work days" don't scare me! :))

Just stopped by and caught up. Doing a great job as far as I can see! Love the pool area, maybe someday I will bite the bullet as well. Grew up with pools in Florida, seemed like every house had one. Here in NC, they aren't nearly as common, and half of the ones that do exist are above ground! :lol_hitti

FYI, the Sherwin Williams product from a few years ago was called Problock, and is pretty much the same thing as Kilz. They have a new product now, which covers a little better, but it is still pretty much the same thing. Definitely sand and seal the wood in the bedroom/game room, that will insure that there won't be any smell in that area.

This was a good idea, but after looking at the size and price of the apartment units, i chose not to go this route. I figured we would use the washer dryer primarily for towels from the pool and the capacity of the apartment units was pretty small. So for nearly $1000 (new), we'll be doing laundry in the house. Thanks for the idea though.

Shopnut, WingNut, NightTrain(I don't think I missed anyone)....You guys were exactly right on the concerns about the pool floating. I was looking back at some pics I took right after the gunite was sprayed (before they started using it for a trash dump!) and there are 6 holes in the bottom of the pool that have that 6" corrugated pipe in it. I talked to the pool guy yesterday and the pipe will be removed and those holes filled just before that put the final surface on the pool. And the holes are there to keep it from floating in case of heavy rain....which we're getting again today. Not before they got all the forms and rebar in for the decking and sidewalks though! So we should be getting concrete as soon as it's dry enough. Around here, I'm not about to wish it would stop raining....it might not start again until October!!

I've got some updated pics I'll try to post soon.

Thanks for the comments NUTTS. I don't think I'll ever replace the metal on the sides of the building, but covering it with something else has been discussed. If I could afford it, I'd have them rock the whole thing....I'm really liking the way that's turned out. Way better than I was imagining (how often does that happen??). We have talked about some type of horizontal siding of some kind, similar to the house, at least on the wall that faces the pool. There probably won't be anything done along those lines for a while though....

Thanks Wingnut....You mentioned two of my favorite parts so far...the barn tin ceiling and the outdoor kitchen. Can't beat the price on the tin for the ceiling (free!). What else are you thinking about? I was very close to using Shopnut's vinyl soffit idea also....especially in the front "shop" part. I could buy the white tin cut to the exact length I needed and went that route.

Shade Structure? Yes....we're kicking around ideas. Options:
1.) A similar metal/tin structure like I did in the front.
2.) A cedar pergola structure of some kind.
3.) Something made with rock columns and ???

The kitchen/patio area is on the east side of the building, so it will get some relief from the late afternoon sun from building, but I would also like to gain some shade earlier in the day and also protect the kitchen from the weather a bit. Ideas are welcome!!

Thanks for keeping up!

^ Good question, evs1.

SIL, Glad to hear your pool builder has everything under control. Let the rains come. The pool will be there for a long time. We are just starting to see some over here.

For the ceiling, I like shopnut's vinyl soffit idea. But I also saw some corrugated roof panels at HD that would give a unique feel to the place. Whatever I do will need to be thin to fit around or under all my lights and not to decrease ceiling height.

For your shade structure, I was also thinking of a Pergola or Gazebo as well. Both could be combined with stone columns or at least with partial height stone column base with cap.

How did they prep that metal wall for the stone?

Not a lot of prep....They poured a footing underneath for the rock to sit on, attached the corrugated metal anchor strips and up it went. The metal and paint were in good shape. Not sure what else may have been needed?

All the forms are up and rebar is in place for decking and patio. We had just dried out enough to pour everything in the next day or two, but it is currently raining again. So it looks like we're in for another week or so delay.

Good news is, progress is being made inside the shop. I'll try to get some current pics up soon.

Luv the overall project pictures. Be sure to leave a day or two open at project end for the Sunset magazine photo shoot & Million Dollar Rooms show guess tour. The colors and plan is really coming together nicely. Best wishes to you and the family. Just remember that I was first to ask for an autographed magazine copy.

Only if you could save the water to fill the pool with. Cheaper and easier to balance. You don't happen to have 10-15,000 gallon buckets handy, do you?

Thanks for the kind words volvo. Although I don't think any magazine shoots are in my future, I appreciate the thoughts. If one does happen to come along, you'll be first in line for a copy though!

That's only 2-3,000 5 gallon buckets if that makes it easier :lol_hitti

My father in law had quite a collection of 55 gallon barrels....I could space them all around the pool and see how much i could catch...Lets see...55 gallons X 8 pounds/gallon...about 440 pounds full. I think I need to take Shopnut's advice and get those party invitations out! A barrel moving party....NightTrain could bring his new rig and we could fill him up! :willy_nil

Got rain last night...not too much though. Supposed to be a line of storms coming through tonight....we'll see what happens. Should pour decking on Thursday if we dodge rain tonight.

Finally some updated pics!!

Work lately has been focused on getting the poolhouse side of the shop finished up. The weather has delayed pool progress, but has let me catch up a bit inside. I wish I could say I built the kitchen cabinets, but I've got a friend who is a cabinet maker and he's done all the cabinets in our house. Here it is...just waiting for stain:

And a few night-time pool pics. Despite the weather, all the decking is formed and rebar is installed. We got gas lines run today for the hot tub heater, grill and heating unit in the HVAC. Also, the first fence posts went in today. We may have decking poured towards the end of the week if the weather holds out. I'm still not to the point where I'm rooting against the rain though!
