30x40x12 new build.

2x 10x10 insulated doors (r13)

1x 36 man door

Builders will be installing solar-r- eclipse on roof and walls (i know some hate it....) claimed r12.82 roof r10.6 walls.

This will be kind of a print/laser/jeep/woodwork/hobby shop that I hope to turn to a fulltime shop for woodworking and my offroad toys, if I can ever get past some recent medical problems where I can actually work again (seizures keep me from driving on the road and running equipment/tools at this time, I'm fortunate that I've gotten them down to about every 3 weeks).

This will not be heated and cooled full time, but I will have the diesal forced air (140k) and a wood stove for heat and a couple portable rolling ac units for the times when I need to cool it a bit.

My original plan was to call the sol-r-eclipse good and enclose with osb walls and ceiling just like you would a normal garage.

Is that enough insulation in this case? I guess I've started questioning how this thin aluminum backed/ white vinyl stuff gives the same insulation factor as fiberglass batt.

Should a put a ceiling in using osb, or would i be ok simply leaving it open? I see benefits to both. Doesn't really matter to me, but I can see it being brighter with the white side of the sol-r-eclipse insulation down, aluminum side top the metal. I have thought of putting the ceiling in and spraying cellulose myself in the "attic" area, but not heating and cooling full time is the juice worse the squeeze?

It doesn't...the foil/bubble wrap companies typically use some creative or misleading information to sell their product. You should mention your location, the reflective foil is better suited to southern locations, but overall I think you'd be happier with batt insulation combined with wind and vapor barriers.

I apologize, southern Tennessee. Yeah they originally had put it down for double bubble on roof only, I have never cared for bubble, I had some come apart on me before, it was next to nothing to change it to the foil backed fiberglass. I've talked to the insulation manufacturer now, and they do recommend blanket insulation if possible. I may just do blanket in the walls and blow in the attic.... buy once cry once.

I knew in the barndo when I have them build it will be closed cell, was trying to cheap it here a little I guess.

EDIT: I dont think blanket is the correct term that i should have use...

:ROFLMAO: Yeah, that claimed R-value is a long way from the truth. I wouldn't waste a cent on that.

Even with part-time heating and cooling in your climate, real insulation is a very worthwhile investment, IMO. The difference in cost to heat/cool, recovery rate, and overall comfort level is massive. If it were me, I'd do at least R-13 in the walls and blow at least R-38 in the ceiling.

My 30x40x12 has standard wide roll fiberglass insulation on the frame before sheeting. Then we added 8" roll strapped to the ceiling. This is my third metal shop building. Adding the additional insulation on the roof we well worth it. I heat and cool with a 36k MrCool.

I have the exact same size shop, garage doors, and man door. 2inch closed cell spray foam in walls then r11 batts and ceiling in R19 cellulose. I installed a 18k pioneer minisplit. It kept at 60degrees [set temp] when -9. It keeps it at 72 [set temp] when over 100...mid missouri temperatures are great.

Highly Highly recommend insulation up front... you really only get one chance. It'll pay long term!
