Hey all, this is my first thread but I have been a long time lurker. I am finally at the point of starting my 30x40 and figured I would document it as I go. They are starting the slab tomorrow, the building and bay door have been ordered as well. Also, the front of the building will be brown flagstone to match the house (as well as the bay door, see pic below). The other pic is where the building will be located. The pipes sticking out of the ground are for the sprinkler system and they will have to be re-routed as they were directly under where the shop will be.

I will update as progress is made...

I am very excited! It will be a combination of a workshop/tool area, mower/polaris/boat storage, and going to move my gym/workout area into one corner of it. That's the plan at least...

Nice! Somewhere in east texas I gather?
What are you doing for exterior on the sides/back? Interior finish?
Is Mueller doing anything special to accommodate the stone veneer in front or are you figuring that out on your own?
Looking forward to seeing more!

You might want to add a location in your profile. It does help us on the input side of discussions. Good luck.

Hey everyone, I fixed my location on my profile. I am in Elgin which is about 25 miles east of Austin.

Pmiranda: The exterior on the sides and back will be tan metal with dark brown trim. The interior will be just the Mueller insulation package. As far as accomodating the stone, I am having a 5" brick ledge on the front of the slab and the front dark brown trim/flashing piece will stick out further to allow for "brick pocket"

My old tools: I am in Elgin (near Austin) and I am the GC on the project. As for costs:
Slab: $8 sq ft turn key. I had to search hard fo a quality guy at this price. The slab will be about 4 foot tall on th back side so thats a decent amount of fill and concrete.
Building: $9k with insulation, colored roof, and delivered
Erection: $2.25 sq ft

Cajunfirehawk: I actually have viewed your thread on the Mueller build many times. Super helpful which made me want to do the same. Thanks!

That's a lot for a shop that size.

Did you use a program to sketch the layout?

I built a 30 x 30 x 12 and am now figuring that I will probably have to close off the fourth wall of a 22 x 24 x 10 attached lean-to so that I can gain some room back.

My layout plans changed a bit, but in reality I should have built a 40 x 60 x 12, although even that would probably be too small.

Nice pics so far and I'm looking forward to the rest of them.

Yeah that is a lot but it is the max size I can fit in that area due to the septic, etc. Also, I sold my boat recently so that frees up space and I have a large 3 car garage that will still have space as it is only two vehicles in it...

Is there a program to sketch the layout? That would be nice to use

There are a few options.

Some are listed in this thread.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=330124

I have not used any of those, as I did mine on paper, but the next time I will be.

Good luck with the build.

pmiranda: The forms hold all the fill, they pack it down and dig the beams. I'll post more pics today when they are done with the beams.

DougWil: What do you mean by lift? The beams are 18 inches below the original ground level. As for packing, with each load of dirt that came, they spread it and packed it down with a skid steer so each level was packed in layers. Luckily the dirt was a little damp so I assume that would help get a harder pack.

The slab on the back side of my house is about 8 foot tall and knock on wood I have not had any issues out of it and it was done the same way.

Beams below original grade?
Are you doing a drilled pier/post with grade beams between or a conventional footing?

Lift meaning a 6" or so layer of fill, compacted, then another layer.

What is going to keep that soil retained from the effects of rain and erosion when the forms are removed or rot away?

Looks like you used a plywood template to set the anchor bolts? Have any trouble with that? Any tips?

Check, double check and triple check measurements has to be perfect or nothing works right,
Also make when you pour the pad use a vibration tool under the plywood to not leave voids it's too hard to get under them by hand

Nice build! I like the door and the facade. Seems like the Mueller build is popular among the Tx group. You're making me wish I would've done a stone facade to match the house.
