30x40x12 Pole building questions

Hey gang,

Wanting to get a 30x40x12 pole building put up this year. I hope to just put up the shell this year and then next year put in some concrete and start insulating and wiring the building to use as a shop for my toys and to let my pickup with snow plow melt off.

Anyway, for 12' sidewalls how long do the poles need to be? Seems that I heard 16' (4' below ground). Do I need to use 4x6 or 6x6? I have heard some say 10' spacing and some say 8' spacing (trusses and poles), which is correct? I live in rural Iowa with no inspections or rules for now in the county.

Not sure if I want to go with 2 10x10 roll up doors or 1 16x10 door.

Any ideas on what a shell would cost.

Not sure what part of IA you are in, but you might take a look at the kits from Menards. They are from Midwest Manufacturing. We put one up outside Omaha last fall. Comes with everything, for the most part.

We are very pleased with the building. We will be doing the concrete, utilities and workshop this summer.

I am about 20 minutes south of you in Glenwood. I have been meaning to get up to town and check Menards & HomeDepot for prices but just haven't yet.

What kind of spacing did you go with? 8' or 10'? Also do you remember the price (PM or email me if you would rather)?

im just started moving dirt yesterday to build a 30x40x12. i plan to use 6x6 post on 10 ft centers. one thing to keep in mind when choosing post length is how level is your building site and do you plan to add alot of fill dirt after the post are set. if you have 12 foot of post out of the ground you will also lose atleast 6 inches when you pour your concrete floor later. you can set the post on 8ft centers and trusses on 4ft centers or some put the trusses on 8 ft centers. im putting my post on 10 ft centers and the trusses on 5 ft centers for mine.

Guys, just a word of advice. If you are able, go wider than 30ft. You wont regret it. But to each his own.

Alot of good advice above. I put my 6x6's at 8' centers and my trusses on 4'. Mine is also 12' high and I used 16' poles. another other 16' was special order and double in price. My 30x72x12 was $20000 for the shell and concrete with 2 10x10 doors. I did alot of pricing and shopping around to save where I could. If your garage doors will be on the 30 side I'd go wider if possible. Remember when you're building it costs next to nothing to go a little bit bigger.

I used 6x6 posts on 8' centers and 4' centers on the trusses. I think I went 4' below ground level. Whatever code was I am not 100% sure.

i used 6x6 poles (& 3 telephone poles) set on 12' centers, trusses 3' centers. I sunk the poles 4' in ground, I'm about 12'6" to bottom of trusses.

I'm having the same problem figuring 2 10x10's or 9x9's or 1 16x10 overhead doors. Seems 2 door would make it stronger but 1 will have more wall space for racks and in my case motorcycles. Anyone here got some pic or comments? I want to sign a contract asap!

Not a pole building, but we built a buddy i race with a 30x40x12 garage last year and he went with a 16x10 door so he could pull his motor home in, and have ample room on either side for his 3 race cars.

Here's another garage we did last year for another buddy i race with, tried talkign him into a larger building since we could, but "i dont need anything that big" and now that is' done he wishes he'da listened LMFAO!!!! 28x28x10 with a 18x8 door

I cant remember the exact dimensions since this one was done quite a few yrs ago, 9 i think, 30 x 36 i "think" with 12' ceiling and 10' all doors. 16x10 and 9x10...but dont hold me to it since it's been a long while and many garages ago.

Thats what i'm talking about! I thinking more and more getting the 16x10 overhead door. That way, I can line up my bikes on both sides and put a 4 post lift in the middle.

I put up a 30 x 48 pole building this year. Ran me just right at 21, 000.

I used to live in Cedar Rapids. Did I ever mention how much I despise Menards?
