Hello all, this is my first post with "The Garage Journal"

Looking for some input from people who have been through this. As the subject states, I'm planning on a building a 30x62x14 pole building, mostly for working on cars, 12feet of it will be a carport for the travel trailer.

I got an estimate from a company, Ark Custom Buildings here in Northwest Washington. They came in a little steep for me cost wise.

I found hansenpolebuildings.com, and it looks like they sell kits, which look way more cost effective. I've already talked to a contractor about building it, and it would be about $11k cheaper than what I was quoted from Ark Custom Buildings however Ark Buildings includes concrete, the contractors quote did not.

Has anyone used either company? Does one have better products than another? Should I just go with the company that does this day in and day out?

I'm soo confused!

Thanks in advance

-Carl

Hansen looks good to me from what I've read online, very little negative feedback that I could find. Please keep us posted on what you decide.

I built a pole barn that matches your dimensions. Well almost, I went 30x60x14 with three 12x12 doors. Self built though so no help for your question but I have no problems with the 30 foot width. It's two "lanes" wide. Bigger is always better though and more SF is cheap with a pole barn.

Just my 2 cents. I was told to build in multiples of 8, so I would go 40x64x14. You need compare apples to apples, if one includes cement and another doesn't then you have to figure what the cement is worth. Also make sure the cement is what you're going to need. Thick enough etc. How are you going to heat it? If you're not sure, I'd look at putting in radiant heat.

Some places it is 8', around here it is 10'.

I think it depends upon anticipated snow loads, etc. for post and truss spacing.

No, it is an old relic based on lumber availability. Old timers thought they were so smart and would try and save making cuts and wasting materials. Increments of 4 is more standard these days but you need to consider your method of construction. Pole barns use metal siding that comes in 3 foot widths so you would actually be just as smart to consider increments of three. Also, the only lumber between posts is purlins and girts which are available in 2' length increments. Kinda dumb since you'll end up cutting the ends anyway to square them up and fine tune the lengths.

THese days, materials are relatively cheap. Build what you want and as you build, use your head so that you don't end up sheathing a roof and having to install a 6" strip of decking at the very edge. It's more about staggering than trying to complete a job using only full sheets and full boards.

When I built mine the standard was 12' between trusses/posts. You could get custom trusses designed and built but for more money. I went with 36'x48' x 12' which was too short. I would go at least 14' tall so you can park an RV in it. I added a 15' bay for the RV as 12' bays are too narrow for easy parking. Go bigger if you can as you will wish you had at some point.

Mine have been 10' inc for depth and 12' for width. Current size is 40 x 96.

I think the increments are based on the builders use of poles and trusses in their basic design. Mostly concerned in the load bearing sides as the ends do not support weight.

I built mine 40' by 60' It has worked out just fine. The advice to go 14' tall ceiling is good. Then you can put anything in there you want.
