Is this a real size or is it for breaking a stripped 1' fastener? Never heard of some of these funky SAE sizes out there. I have mainly worked on japanese motorcycles and newer cars so I don't have a huge amount of experience with standard sizes.

It's a real size. It's uncommon though. x/32" sizes arent used too much anymore but there are a bunch you can find. Most are going to be used vintage ones though. You can get 3/32", 5/32", 7/32", 9/32", 11/32", 13/32", 15/32", 17/32", 19/32", 21/32", 23/32", 25/32", 27/32", 29/32" and 31/32". I know because I've looked. I'm not sure why but I've been tempted for a while to put together an x/32" socket set. Since they're so uncommon it would really just be more off a collection piece.

I knew about alot of the /32 sizes but even an idiot like myself can figure out 31/32 is pretty darn close to an inch.

Yeah they get pretty specific. I can't remember what they're used off the top of my head but I've seen 2-1/32" sockets out there.

Though not specifically for what I mention earlier but that size might come in handy for breaking loose a slightly rounded 1". Oh how i wished I worked on more standard size stuff. Great deals on ebay for SAE. Not so much for metric. Cant justify buying much standard.

depends upon how much time you want to spend doing searches for stuff.
there are some good prices on metric sockets and wrenches - good US made stuff - although the last few days it looks like Ebay sellers all think their stuff is gold-plated.

there's a "Ebay Hot Deals" thread here that I've been posting tons of stuff in lately. just haven't gotten to it the last few nights because there have been so many listings I can't keep up with them.

for building bridges or space shuttles, perhaps?
that's not the most expensive socket set I've seen, believe it or not.

AutoTeck84 - take a look at the "Hot Deals" forums here. there's threads for Ebay, HomeDepot, Amazon, etc., etc.

(bear in mind the stuff I'm posting in the "Ebay" thread is strictly US made, and I don't pay any attention to Snap-on, Matco, Mac, or Cornwell because the prices for used are usually inflated above what a guy would pay retail for new.)

(if you don't care about COO or mis-matched sets or owner engravings, you can find stuff there fairly cheap.)

11/32 is standard for #8 machine screw nuts. It isn't in most sets of wrenches, nor in most socket sets, except they show up (along with other oddball sizes, like 8-point sockets) in cheap oriental socket sets. I've become used to having to buy 11/32 wrenches and sockets to fill out my "complete" sets!

Thanks man. The stuff you post are usually great deals. I like that you don't include SO and likes. Can't consider any of that stuff a "hot deal".

I try to be pretty selective about what I post in that thread. If it isn't something I'd actually consider buying myself, I don't post it.
On the truck brands: my take on it is that most Ebay sellers seem to be of the belief that anything with "Snap-on" (or Matco or Mac or Cornwell) stamped on it is gold-plated, so I just ignore them altogether.

I'd be curious to see where these sockets would be used. This set costs over $40k so I don't think I'll be buying it anytime soon.

Here's the one review on this set. Hilarious.

“Very Good.” by: Bob

I took a second mortgage out on my house to buy this socket set. The quality is top notch. I have not found a use for this set yet but when I need it, I'll be glad I have it. It has great "WOW" factor when showing it to friends.

31/32" is a real size, but not a standardized SAE size. These odd sizes were used mostly before WW2.

What he said.

31/32" is the old U.S.S. standard for 9/16" bolt/nut.
25/32" is the old U.S.S. standard for 7/16" bolt/nut.
19/32" is the old U.S.S. standard for 5/16" bolt/nut.
11/32" is the old standard for #8 hex screw. Common in electrical work.
Craftsman used to offer a 21/32" socket, but I don't remember what it was for.
These sizes are now mostly obsolete, but are found on older equipment.

Some guys want to be able to wrench whatever comes along.
Won't find them on your recent rice-burner, but mechanics of older stuff and machinery might have an occasional need even these days.

I have some 32nd sized sockets, But don't think I have ever used them. They were in a box of sockets that I got and I didn't have them so I added them to my sets just in case.

I have a Bonney 3/4 drive 31/32 socket that came with a lot of other 3/4 sockets I bought. I have an old Lectrolite stubby dbe in 25/32 and 3/4 iirc. Neat but unused.

I run into quite a few vintage 19/32 and 25/32 wrenches out in corn country, especially farm auctions. I've always kinda wondered what farm equipment used those.

I seen a socket and ratchet set on eBay just now that used a 7/16 drive size. Never heard of this before either. They were ancient. Blackhawk I think was the brand

some of the 32nd sizing are almost dead ringers for common metric sizes. i often wonder if some older US companies made them to fit imported products or items that werent machined correctly.

i picked up a 31/32 no name but its stamped usa id like to put together a set myself just to have one, but dont want the cheap china sockets nor do i want to spend coin on them from a store or ebay.

Does a 27/32" socket exist? I've been looking today and I haven't been able to find anything except for plumbing tube sockets. My OCD is getting the best of me and I want a 27/32" 1/2" dr socket if it's out there.

I have Eight 25's and Four 31's but zero 27's, so you may be in OCD pain on that one...

FWIW - There are a couple dealers on Ebay who sell new (old stock?) Armstrong wrenches in 32's. How do I know, because I bought some. Why? I really don't know. They don't even fit in my wrench racks.... I have a problem...

I run into these two sizes occasionally when I'm tinkering with old Delta woodworking machinery. Off the top of my head, I can think of a couple machines in particular (heavy duty shaper, 17" drill press) that incorporate a 25/32" nut into various components and assemblies. As a result, I'm always on the lookout for any sockets and wrenches that are sized on 32nd increments. If you're working on old USA made stuff, there's a good possibility you'll come across a 32nd sized fastener.

:+1: to what Jim said:

Outside the small sub-3/8 sizes, 19 and 25 are the more common in 32nds, a few 25's will surface and, once in great while, 17 and 31.

Machinery and old Model T's and A's used some in 32nds, as did other car mfg's; a few were used after that but WWII went s long way towards standardization, then metric came along and screwed the pooch, and we get to maintain tools against two standards, old and new.

And now the manufacturers seem to be in a competition to add other odd drive systems like Torx, and all the other variants of socket head fasteners, which IMO was and is simply a way to exclude the common user from doing repairs. (Think not? look at the extreme and wide variety of fastener head systems in use on electronics, especially personal electronics, including the "tamper resistant" drives..)

The real question for the 32nd sizes the OP brought up is why so many tool companies still manufacture and sell them in 32nds. They only appear to include them in sets, do they ever sell singles?

While I have seen 31/32 wrenches and sockets I have never bought one because chances are a 25MM will be close enough if the time ever comes.

1/4 Drive: 5/32, 7/32, 9/32, 11/32, 17/32

3/8 Drive: 17/32, 19/32, 21/32, 25/32, and 31/32

7/16 drive: 7/32, 11/32, 15/32, 19/32, 17/32, 21/32, 25/32, and 31/32

really unless you're working on old or odd stuff you only need x/32" sizes 11/32" and smaller. Larger than that are not any currently used standard.

Now I will pick up the tools if I see them for a good price, but I don't ever expect to use them, it's more of a "just in case" type thing.

hey, since you mentioned it, I've got a 15/32" in that 3/8" hex drive set I got for Christmas!

the 57/64" socket was a deep-well I saw on Ebay, but it has apparently been sold.

Eprey search for "57/64 Socket" then when live auctions got zero results, I used the Advanced search setting and looked at sold auctions.
