Will that fit in a 3/8 drill chuck? I need to use that size to drill a hole in a gas can to install a vent kit. My Bosch drill has a 3/8 capacity chuck and I only have that one drill.

No
3/8" is .375"
31/64" is .484"

The 3/8 drill chuck will only hold 3/8" and smaller bits. The 31/64" bit is bigger than 3/8"

Reduced shank it will, straight shank, not a chance.

3/8" = .375"

31/64" = .484"

Well, a 3/8" capacity chuck will grab a little over 3/8", but not much. Of course, if you have a bit set with a 3/8" reduced diameter shank on the bits over 3/8", then that would work.

There is a SLIM possibility that if you happen have a bit set of the type with three flats ground on, that it might actually fit too, but I think it's just too large.

Reduced shank drills are often referred to as Silver and Demming: the 2 dude's names who patented them.

That usually refers to bits over 1/2" with a 1/2" reduced diameter shank. I can't say I've seen it used for 3/8" shanks.

I have installed many of those yellow vents into plastic gas cans. I have ALWAYS used a 1/2 drill bit and they fit nice and snug. Never had one fall out yet...

Plastic tends to stretch a bit, Id go with a step bit and check fit before you go to large.

Sell one of your Snap-On ratchets and buy a real drill. ;)

Basically a NOS Craftsman plastic 2 1/2 gallon vented gas can sold for $100 on ebay. Yikes

Wonder how much a person could make selling contraband Canadian fuel containers in the US? New ones like this with the vents are sold for under $20

Not much. We can buy a kit that comes with a vent and normal pour spout to retrofit newer cans for about 10 bucks.

They were made by a company called Chilton. I have one but it's only a one gallon. If I had it to do over, I would have never left it in the sun for any length of time.
