Circular saw. But you really need to rip off some shingles and some sheathing to tie it in properly. If you just cut the eave off and tie the other to it, you will end up with a hump where the two are joined if all you do is tie in the shingles. Your sheathing boards or plywood or OSB, (whatever is on your roof) needs to be staggered all the way up. That is why you will see a lot of places with the addition dropped down below the existing roof line, so the don't have to mess with the existing roof.

Great opportunity to use taller side walls and step roof line up to allow for higher
ceiling height in addition. Like Kevin54 said, remove the shingles and felt and then
strike a chalk line at the center point of the gable truss set the skill saw to sheathing
depth and have at it.

Would you recomend removing the shingles even if I put a metal roof over the old shingles? Thanks for the info.

I have seen metal roofing placed on top of shingles before. Problem though with yours is that you will have shingles only on half of the roof. This will probably show through onto the metal without shingles under them. It’s always difficult to make the addition flow seamlessly to the old buildings. As the other posters mentioned plan on pulling back sections of the old roof decking to stager them also the same as the siding.

A little extra work now on this and the building will look great. The other idea of a taller roof is also a great idea. Little extra cost in lumber, but then you may not have to pull off the shingles and stager the plywood on the existing roof. Good luck and keep us posted.

Down the road you will never say, "Gee, I should have left all those old shingle up there on that roof......It would have given me a real nice hump there in the middle of the new metal!" Trust me....Take It Off!

Like others have said, go taller on the new addition. That will give you a chance for a lift in the future. You can remove the OSB from the existing wall and sister some studs in, or build a new wall. That will eliminate the roof tie in. But if you are going with a metal roof, I would remove all of the old shingles first. It will make for a better job.

When screwing down the metal roof over the shingles just the thickness of the
shingle will telegraph visually through the metal. Believe me, it will. I passed a local
new garage build today and they stepped up one bay and it looked good. It breaks
up the long, low, bland look.

Looking good so far.

Will you have an interior passageway between the original building and the addition?

Have you considered bumping the addition up a couple of feet and using scissors trusses for lift clearance?

I'm going to keep the 2 buildings separate for now. The ceiling hieght is 12' 4.5" and I plan on getting a 10,000 pound 2 post lift.
