Long time lurker, first time posting.

Looking for opinions on this, these are the largest sizes that I can go with in my township from a square footage perspective. My design includes 2 9x7 doors with the remaining space used as a man cave/workshop. I currently have one car to store with another in the cards. Not sure I will mind not having space in front of the vehicles and am willing to sacrifice this for more space in the workshop. A lift is in the cards but probably not for a while. I do my own car maintenance as well.

Has anyone made this tradeoff, and if so, how did it turn out? Anything I am missing here?

Thanks!

The doors will be on the 32' side grouped on the right, with a regular entry door on the left.

Your question got me thinking about perhaps having the doors on the 24' end with the workshop in the back?

I'd go with the 32x24 (which is the size of my original garage coincidentally). The 22' dimension will limit you putting cabinets or benches in and still leaving length for a larger vehicle like a pick up truck.

Mine is 36x24 .. with doors on the 36' side.. I have a F150 extended cab (not super-cab!) Long box as a company vehicle.. The truck Just barely fits in!! If I had to actually work on the engine, I would have to hang part of the rear outside. So go deeper if you have the option, and don't plan on workbenches in front of your bay doors if you are less than 26' deep.

What size vehicles do you own or plan on owning. As mentioned above extended cab pickups are pretty long, but if you drive compacts the garage depth isn't as critical.

I would not do 22' one way -
I was looking at 22' x 32', found out with the trusses that 24' x 36' was bigger and cheaper.

32' and 22' both seemed to be odd sizes to builders - they liked 24', 30', and 36'

I would not do 22' either. Had that in my last garage and it was too tight and not worth it for someone who likes to work in their garage. I have two 36x26 garages in an L-shape now and it's perfect. One side goes deeper to 28' for about 8' so I had room to mount my tankless water heater and water softening system.

I too found that it was cheaper to go bigger as well as taller in the garage. I plan on sharing some pictures as I begin my float coating and lift projects in the coming weeks.

To be able to work effectively, it really needs about 12 ft width per vehicle, so if your doors are on the longer side, it depends on how long your vehicles are. I would lean to the 24 length anyway for extra space at the front of the vehicle. My garage is 26 deep, and I have a row of toolboxes on the back wall, it is less room at front of vehicles than i prefer, but that depth was my limiting factor.

Also use 10 ft wide doors, just a lot easier with a wider truck or similar and having the mirrors poking out.

I guess my recommendation then is to go with 32 x 24 using two 10 x (7 or 8) doors, having two bays for vehicles at approx 24 of the width and the remaining 8 ft is dedicated to tool boxes, workbench, and storage.

I don't have an out building ...... but my third garage is 24 foot deep (end to end on the foundation). Nine foot wide door, 2001 Chevy Silverado extended cab, 20" deep toolboxes and about 1 foot to walk between the box and the truck. I say deeper.....
