Hello all,
I started this build last fall by clearing a spot in wooded portion of my property. Before I paid someone to clear the trees from my build site I decided I would attempt to clear them with cable and pulleys. The pictures wont do the setup justice but I was able to fall every tree and pull all but one stump from the ground. The pulley setup was .5"cable, 5 ****** blocks, 3 Klein pork chops. This setup can generate an 18:1 mechanical advantage. So if I pull with 1000lbs ill get somewhere south of 18000lbs on the tree. If I put the cable choker 25ft up the tree, well then I have one hell of a moment about the root ball.

Ive been thinking about this garage for approx. 2 years. Ive looked at countless projects on this site and others. I didn't want to use pressure treated lumber and also wanted to have a second story for an office and storage. The garage was modeled in solidworks and I scaled it based on what I thought I could afford. The building is 32x32 with an attic truss. Attic space will be 14x32 with 7ft head space.

Since I didn't want to use pressure treated and still wanted to build a post style building, I decided to make my own concrete columns to set my non pressure treated lumber on. I made a mold and cast the concrete with a steel core consisting of 3/16"plate and .5"rebar. The wood portion of the post is a 3 up 2x6x12 glue laminate screwed together. The 2x6 laminate is attached to the concrete column with 2 .5"carrage bolts.

I was able to barrow a skid steer to drill the holes for the posts. Holes are 1'in diameter and about 5 feet deep. I tamped in 6 inches of stone and poured 6 inch thick footer of concrete on top of the stone. I then set the posts on the concrete footer.

Wow, interesting post design. I'm curious how strong those would still be if the concrete were to crack?

Where's your location? Has a far northern feel to it.

Whats a klein pork chop? Nevermind google told me. Neat work on the root ball extraction.

I'm located in pa. Post crack would be pretty bad. They are reinforced with rebar but I don't want to think about cracking. I was using u bolts to attach my pulleys to the cables and they kept stretching. I was talking with one of my go to old timers about the u bolt setup. He suggested a pork chop. After he explained what it was I got on eBay and ordered 3. Cut the setup time by 5x.

Cool, homemade Perma-columns. That's exactly how I'd build mine, whenever I'm ready...
U got it! I had 2 places quote an actual permacolumn. I couldn't believe how much they wanted. I built mine for roughly $12 a piece. University of Wisconsin at Madison has published a few really good structural reports on permacolumns. I modeled mine after results from this report. "Moment resisting wood-to-concrete pier connection". The concrete to wood post connection is not the same as the trade name made permacolumns. Permacolumn has a patent on there design.

last 5 holes dug and footers poured. Expecting rain today so had to cover the holes. Also, concrete poured around first 5 posts.

Living out in the sticks provides endless excitement. I had a run in with 2 bears Sunday morning. The noise maker was on standby the rest of the day.

Spent Sunday working on the garage. Was able to get 4 of the 8 roof truss header installed. I'm using 2x12x16's. Lagged to the posts on the inside and notched/lagged on the outside.

Sat and Sun were spent bracing trusses, purlins and roof tin. All in all the tin looks really good. Its not perfect but it looks really good. Ill be taking a few weeks off from the build for some much needed vacation. To be honest im burnt out.

Well its been quite a while but I have finally made some progress. The concrete is poured. I dont have a picture yet but the expansion cuts are also cut. 6 squares per ASCE recommendations given 4kpsi fiber reinforced. The pad is 5 inch thick with wire mesh. A slight monolithical pour at the open ends which ill build the end walls on. I feel confident (ehh hopeful) that i can set my bridgeport and lathe on it without issue. Poured this past wed so ill wait the 7 days before anchoring my end walls.

Hey all,
I'm starting to think about the garage door. I'm going to build for a 9'high by 10'wide opening. I'm undecided as to weather I should hinge the doors or have a slider? Anyone have an opinion? I'm a big fan of jaysinspaceman's setup. Tragic to hear about his passing but one of the best builds on this sight. Hes got a steel slider with a man door built in. Ill have a separate man door but still... the question is a slider or hinge.

Finally I'm getting back to finishing the garage. House wrap and windows are in place. Tin is next!

thanks. Yeah it is similar to your build location. I tried to keep as many trees as i could. It looks like ill need to take a few more trees down for my overhang but thatll be a job for next year.
