Above 1200 Sq/FT 32X40 Garage Build WI

Here is my 32x40x10 stick built garage project that I have been working on since June of this year. We decided it was time to build a dedicated shop/hangout garage. My 3rd stall shop just didn't' have the room over the years to do a lot of work in, especially after adding tools and a tractor over the years. I would have to move everything in and out just to do really anything in it. I will be doing the majority of work on this to keep it affordable.

The Plan
32X40x10
2x6 walls
16x8 and 9x8 garage doors
In floor heat
200amp service


Here is the location I've selected, now to remove the garden. Back left corner of our 2.75 acre property. You might be able to see the stakes to see the layout.


Roughing out the layout with my 1025R in late May of this year, spent about 10 hours moving dirt, piling it in back for later use in the front.


Material delivery late may. I had ordered it all in March, hoping to save on rising prices and avoid delays for doors and materials.

Working on the pad in preparation for concrete for the last week in June.

180 Tons Later !!!! about about 2-3 days total

Concrete guys got the forms and insulation in, time for me to install the 4 300' runs of pex

Electrical panel rough in, was going to do it, but decided it was betting to hire it out, as it would have to have them come and certify it anyways


Hvac install and pex clean up, waiting on the boiling to get delivered, it will be electric

August 22nd I've got power, no more extension cords.

August 25th, Deal the day at home depot. I ran to Menards and Home Depot over lunch to get some more 14/2 wire and I found 13 oak cabinets on clearance for a grand total of $230.00 (retail was almost $3000 !!!!)

The lady at the count asked which ones I wanted and I said all of them !!! They were marked down to $9 and $19-29 ea.

Did you keep the lumber covered on top only after delivery to keep it dry?

How much more room will this be from the other garage?

Here was is my old work space, The 3rd Car garage, the picture is from 2019. I was making room for my 1025r before it was delivered. it was really long, but narrow. Probably had 16x16 work area, crammed with tools. had to move half the stuff just to work.

its about 250-300ft or so from the house. I did have all the materials tarped until it was needed. I did want it as a project so my sons could learn a few things as I had when I was their age from my father.

It will probably be about 900sq ft bigger work area than I have now, and I can have things setup in more of a permanent position, as that garage was mostly for storage. I will now have room for more tools !!!

Yea, its hard to get motivated when you spend half your time moving back and forth stuff just to do most anything.


Future plans for a concrete pad in front, thinking about a 20x32 (not in the budget right now and 2-3ft retaining wall on the left side) and some dirt clearing on the right side with a gravel base area. I still need to bring in at least 60 ton of base and then I can move about 40-60 ton of the excavated black dirt to build up in front of that future pad. Its really low about 20 feet on the left side from the front of the garage. Mini split will be installed in spring, as I do not need air conditioning right now. Wiring will be prepped for it now though.

Promised my boys we'd get a pool table/ping pong for it when we are done. We will look for a deal on a nice used one. ( it will also double as a light work table I figure.)

Got a few things done over the last 2 days. One garage door opener installed, last few blockings installed, electrical run for opener walls and ceiling outlets.

Hoping to get an inspection for framing/elec/hvac on Friday so I've been double checking every item, will do more Thursday. Hoping work on trim/siding/ceiling this weekend.

Checked/finished all sill plate bolts for tightness.
Checked/finished electrical/label panel
Checked/finished bocking/bracing
Checked windows/door
Checked/finished house wrap/Tape

1 Garage Door installed, and still needs a little adjustment here and there.

Most of my wiring is done. Still need to do some 240 outlets and do the run for future mini split.

Got a little done this week, hope to have most siding done by the end of next weekend. Took next Monday off as well to get a little more time in.

Yes, it will be in the next row or 2, still looking to where I want it. Going to add 2 fan spots and switches also, at least have it pre-wired and also waiting on where I am putting outside outlets in.

Shop looks great. Looks like you have three bulb 48" light fixtures. I'm leaning toward a similar light setup (48" three bulb TechBright LED fixtures Prolighting) for my shop. Are you happy with the light output?

What are your plans for your shop sound system? I gather you are planning 4 channel audio? I'm at the point of running low voltage before walls are closed up on my project and debating it 2 channel stereo is sufficient or if I should prewire for 4 channels while I'm at it.

Doing cable to each corner, so 4 channel. You might as well wire for 4, it will always give you options.

The lights are very nice, and happy with the output. The pice is nice. I will have 3 rows of 3. This is far superior to my old space. I probably should of went 3x4 but that might be overkill

Walls, I’d love to do 3ft steel, then drywall above that. But the cost vs just drywall is pretty big. I think I’ll just do drywall and paint.

Soil in my area very sandy, and the concrete has rebar and mesh. This should work just fine for a mono slab, the thickened edge really locks it in and I've got a lot of base below that.

Using the tractor was a breeze. I just used the bucket, I have a piranha bar on the front. It cuts into soil like butter. As for flattening, bucket and rakes. The final leveling was with sand. Dirt and gravel moving was probably the most fun, seat time is always great. It was nice to have projects for it, I could have used it many times it the past, but never had one. I've rented skid steers and excavators in the past and that gets costly. It's one of those things that you get and say, why didn't I buy this a few years ago. I've had it since 2019

This is so true! I got my first tractor this year and I keep telling myself the same thing. It's so useful in more ways than I imagined.

makes sense didnt know you did the thickened edge, but i saw the insulation board thatll help too

im thinking about getting one of those cutter bars for my massey 2300 and i think im going to attempt leveling my floor and prepping for the pour with it too but have never done it before. Itll be tough to get the whole thing to 4.5" thick all the way around my 30x40
