hey guys i have been lurking on here for a while now and finally decided to pull the plug and build the shop of my dreams.
let me give you a little background. i am 24 and bought my house 4 years ago. it only had a 20x28 garage on it but i figured that would work for the time being. well i have a ton of toys. 2 snowmobiles, a rock crawler jeep, dirtbike, supermoto, harley and twin turbo cummins. my current garage filled up quickly needless to say. so now im building the ultimate shop. its 32x48 with 13' ceilings. i also will have full bonus room trusses with a 16x48' room up top. i am going to section it off to two 16x48' rooms. one will be storage and the back will be a party room over looking the river. should be sweet when its all finished complete with a car lift and a powerwash/paint bay with a big retractable curtain. i plan on using it to fab on my truck and jeep. also store a lot of my toys!!!

my garage is going to hang out 10' in front and behind my existing one. i did this so i can have two entry doors. one to the front and one to the rear.

I like that idea!

You got pretty big aspirations going for the "ultimate" fab shop. I think OldCarGuy or ZTfab will hold that title for quite some time.

Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing. I look forward to seeing your progress.

i am excited to see the outcome of your garage! You being so young and clearly having some dough to toss around to build a dream inspires me to continue working my a$$ off each day, me only being 19!
Are you on any forums with your truck? It looks good

Nice job, young man. I started in real estate at your age and it has worked out just fine. Keep up the good work and post pics for us old guys.

thanks guys. they are laying block today so the building will start next week. i have a couple questions for you guys. what and when should i seal my floor? it will have oil, welding sparks and stuff wheeled all over it. i dont want to use epoxy because im afraid it might chip or look bad in a couple years. what about staining it and then sealing that? or doing a burnout in there and sealing that in the floor? any input would be greatly appreciated because that is the next step for me

Where did you run your floor drains to? I am wanting to put floor drains in my shop when I build it but not sure how to do it.

I would do a search, or post your question in the flooring forum. At least one floor coating (and staining) manufacturer has a presence on the forums.

That's going to be a nice shop! I'm actually in the planning/budgeting stages for mine and was looking to put attic trusses in mine as well. I was wondering if you would tell me what the cost of each attic truss ended up being?

Also are you framing on 16" or 24" centers?

Sweet build, so what machinery / tools plans you got for her ?

well right now i have the basics. welder, plasma cutter, torches, 80 gallon air comp, nice tool box. i pretty much buy whatever i need to do the job. i dont like to pay for someone else to do stuff for me. i just bought a bunch of stuff from gregsmith equipment like an atlas pv-10p, oil drain, trans jack, parts washer, sand blast cabinet. i will be making 2 benches out of steel and a 4x8 fab table all hooked up and ready to weld on. i will be making all my small equipment like a vise or bench grinder be on standard truck receivers and weld the female end on my benches so i can pin it in place when needed and throw it under the bench and out of the way when im done.

here is the link to the lift i bought

here are some pics of my garage from lunch time today. they will have all the walls standing by the end of the day. they framed in a couple windows but we are waiting to place the other two until after the stairs are in

I think for your floor if you are looking for something temporary, I'd buy the cheap plywood to cover places you are doing the most work, untill you are ready to paint or stain and seal the floor.

Coming along nicely, and quick!
Footers/frost wall not required in your area for attached structures???

did a monolithic pour. 1.5 blocks on that.

8x8 roll up door in between the two garages.

16x48 bonus room. the knee wall is 5'9" and he is 5'10" for reference

You probably need that tall door for the huge cummins!

Great looking start, envious of all your space.

Looks great! I love the single high garage door on one side, I need one like that to park the deuce-and-a-half in to keep it out of the rain....

should be starting siding asap. i am waiting on a tempered window to put by my stairs. they will be done next week. i am doing the inside. i plan on putting steel on walls and ceiling. i was thinking about running it horizontal instead of vertical for ease of running conduit and not having to put nailers up. anyone do that also? pros? cons?

If you plan on running your tin horizontal inside be prepared to see dirt and dust on the horizontal surfaces. If you run it vertical you won't have to worry about that. It's not bad at all doing air lines or conduit for tin that is vertical.

looks great!! Did you consider skylights upstairs?

most likely. i will also have a set of french doors on the backside next spring.

i know i thought of that also. but i dont want to run horizontal boards for nailers. seems like a waste of money to me... i guess i will see whats up in the next couple months when i get to that point
