So, on my way to work this morning, I called my contractor to accept the final revision to his bid, and he said "that's great news, because the excavator will be there at 9:00"

I glanced at a clock -- it was 8:53!

We've had much back and forth for the past 4 weeks, and he already knew I was going to go with him, so I was pleasantly surprised. You couldn't ask for a better day. Supposed to be 65 and sunny all week!

As of 1:00, the digging is done. The foundation is being poured right now, and the block walls will be put in tomorrow. Wow, these guys move fast!

One suggestion of his was to go with a "stepped" footing to alleviate the problem of uneven ground (it's built on/into a hill). Rather than bring in a ton of fill, which would entail the construction of a retaining wall to prevent erosion, the step makes it such that the footing extends below 42" at every point. Plus, when done, the only 1st floor window will end up being high enough off the ground that you can't see in (and it will have gnarly, thorny rose bushes underneath).

Thanks to everyone for answering my questions and giving advice for the past 2 months!!!

More pics to come after the footing is poured!!!
