FINALLY!

I've been planning my build for about 5 years, since we bought our current home and my garage space was cut in half.

I'm currently working out of my 24 x 24 garage. In it, I have vertical and horizontal band saws, an iron woker, lathe, torches, two welders, large drill press, 20T press, amongst all of the hand tools, benches, shelves, etc. To say the least, it is FULL.

I've been hauling dirt and building the pad over that time and now the economics are in my favor.

I bought materials from Menard's after reviewing several material and labor quotes. 34 x 40 x 12, 1' overhangs, 4/12 roof with a 2/12 scissor inside. Red with charcoal wainscot and trim.

The materials won't be here for another week, but I drilled the footings today.

The photos show my property; the pad can be made out by the lighter color behind (to the right) the existing house and garage.
Progress!

I'm just NE of Des Moines, in Polk County. My wife is from Howard county, so I travel to the NE often.

I've enjoyed reading through so many builds on here over the past few years, I'll try to return the favor with pics and detail. I'll start with my initial material purchase which is $11,700 for the building materials. I've done the dirt work myself, so the cost isn't "out of pocket", but it would have added a few thousand.

Now I get to wait a week, or so, until the deliveries start!

I built a 40x56x12 last fall with the help of family and friends. I have the build pictures in my album. Its red and black in color, check it out.

Thanks for sharing, bleazenb. I like the look; hopefully my colors will "feel" similar.

I finally received my delivery from the manufacturer, then I picked up the remainder of the lumber...

A little progress today. Corners set and began plumbing the interior posts (not pictured).

Should make good headway tomorrow.

By the way, for anyone whom has ever questioned the worthiness of a palm nailer, I am a BIG fan. Drives 60's like butter!

Three weekends and it's pretty well framed. I expected to be a little farther along, but what the heck. Might need to take a little vaca so I can get the steel on quickly!

I like the feel of the 15'+ ceiling center, but I'm already wishing I would have added to the 12'-6" sidewall. I'll pull some dirt out before I put any rock down. Hopefully I can net near 12' after concrete.

Looking good nxcj, I just finished my new build. 40 miles NW of Des Moines.

It is really fun watching your progress.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Go figure, everyone had shorts on yesterday and today the wood is covered with ice...

More weekend progress:

Set the south side, solo, today. Seemed to go more smoothly than with two people...of course, I had a favorable wind.

After 4 years, I'm finally getting some progress made on the interior. 100,000 BTU Dayton tube heater and a corrugated steel ceiling.

Next I'll be completing the wall insulation and sheeting, then permanent lighting, etc.

Finally, I'm working on the layout of permanent shelving, and equipment and tool storage placement. Currently debating myself with placing machines against the wall or placing them in open space, with a 48" aisle between them and workbenches placed on the wall. We'll see. Machines in question are a vertical Delta 14" bandsaw, Delta 6" vertical belt sander, Delta 17" drill press, Logan 200 lathe, Jet 7" x 12" horizontal band saw, misc pedestal mount grinders, etc. I may compromise and leave the saws in an open area, with all others on the wall.

As I finalize permanent equipment and bench locations, I'll locate my welding table, welders and related items that are all on wheels.

Current specs:

34' x 40'
16' OH door / 3' service door
12' interior sidewall, scissor truss
5" slab, #4 bar @ 2x2
100 sub-panel, 50' from house panel
CAT 5 feeding WIFI / Coax for dish
