My wife and I recently sold our house in West Virginia and moved back to Fairfax, Va to house hunt (two kids and two dogs in a two bedroom apartment has been fun haha). I'm getting a bit ahead of myself because the contract was just ratified (slated to close in 3 weeks), but I'm excited to have such a large space in an attached, residential garage. My previous garage was a 20x22. This one is 34x34x14 and already has adequate lighting and electrical. First project will be to insulate/finish/paint the walls and ceiling. Near future plans include a two post lift (to start) and a four post down the road. Back and forth about flooring. I had RaceDeck in a previous residence, so that is the front runner; however, I'd like to make the space a bit more modern, so I'm leaning towards their 'Smoked Oak' option. Thoughts?

Former DMV native here. That's a fantastic size for an attached. Subbed!

Welcome, in Fairfax myself but I mainly wrench in my driveway! Watching with interest!

That's a very large space for ffx. Looks like it should make a nice garage.

Apologies for the ambiguity. The current apartment is in Fairfax. The new place is in Woodbridge (just over the water from Clifton). Thanks! Will add new/additional pics when we take possession.

I used to live just over the Occoquan from Clifton. Right off Yates Ford Rd. I had a very nice detached garage at our home, which was right on the river. 720 square ft. detached, 540 attached. Over 2 acres. It was a nice place. Took over a year to sell in 2017-18. After retirement, I had to leave. Traffic was impossible and got worse every year.

Yeah. The market here currently is wild. The house was on the market for 2 days (weekend), with offers due by Sunday night. Your former residence sounds nice. We may try to construct a detached at some point in the future. Thankfully, I don't have to deal with traffic (remote software developer).

First priority will be to get the driveway (26x96) paved with asphalt. 469 runner or others familiar with the area, do you have any contractors that you trust to complete the work? I have an impending quote from Collegiate Sealers, but would like to compare prices/timelines. Thanks!

Nice size, especially for an attached garage.

Although mine was detached it was the same 34x34x14 size. I campaigned several race cars, sleds and sandrails out of that shop as well as ran my small speed shop/side business for 20 years.

We use Robinson for our new construction work. Top notch outfit.

Years ago Finley Paving did the community I lived in off of Davis Ford RD for the HOA. While they were there they did my driveway.

When the house was sold in 2018 the driveway was still in very good condition. The price of asphalt is very much tied to the price of petroleum, but at $5,000 for a topcoat I feel we got a very fair price.

I would leave it stone as a former NoVa resident I feel it's a bit warm their for my liking. Crushed stone does not generate a ton of heat like asphalt does. Maybe, some stone block with grass in the middle of them. Gives a nice look. Porous Paving Open Cell Concrete Block

That's a really neat idea!

The height is just perfect
May end up building a small climbing wall for the kids. I don't have quite enough height for a basketball hoop.

Question for those with more experience: how should we finish the exposed concrete? If you notice, the 2x4s currently on the wall are set up like furring strips; do we need to actually frame out the wall (like you would in a basement) or just continue with the 2x4 strips (apologies if this is not the correct verbiage) at 24" on center?

Thanks again! They recommended that we wait until after we move in (moving trucks and other contractors will be there shortly thereafter). We're scheduled to have it paved in the middle of May.

Found a buyer for the shed. They're slated to pick it up the day we close. We outsource our lawn services, so it's a bit superfluous for our needs.

Closed on the house yesterday. The guy came to check out the shed, but said that he was unable to load it up on a trailer because of its height (it's a little over 16ft tall). He's going to come back with a crew sometime next week to disassemble/remove the shed in pieces. Not really a set back because the fence installers aren't slated to get started for another few weeks.

Excited to get moved in to the new space. I'm going to cross post in the heating/ac subforum, but thought I'd ask again here: how would you recommend we go about insulating/installing drywall on the concrete walls? Frame out walls like a basement? Or add additional wood (24" on center) as strips, screwed into the concrete?

If you’re happy with electric layout, an option for finishing the inside would be 1-1/2” or 2” rigid insulation using light gauge “Z” furring in a 24” oc horizontal layout. Tapcon into the concrete would make for a secure attachment & they you can drywall or plywood to the metal furring. Alternatively a vertical wood 2x3 or 4 stud wall with fiberglass would work well.

Ya know, I "cringed" when you mentioned asphalt for the driveway. Asphalt is a good choice for "straight" runs but the pad in front of the garage door is doing to see a lot of tires GRINDING into a turn driving out and especially backing into the garage. A concrete pad in front of the door would take that punishment, asphalt, not so much.
Pavers are nice but will tend to sink in areas and not in others after time and become uneven if not installed perfectly.
After all is said and done, it's your space, do as you will, you have to live with your decisions!
Good luck outfitting your cool garage!

Thanks! For sure will remain a clean space. My wife wants to get a 70s muscle car or two. I'm into modern imports; the current project is a turbo 911 :) Garage will have a two post and four post lift, but not much else on the floor.

Our neighbors have a really nice concrete driveway that also has us second guessing our decision to go with asphalt.

The garage contractors finished earlier this evening. Going to add a black rubber molding where the sheetrock meets the concrete. The movers are bringing the rest of our stuff this Monday (ended up being a good thing, but the first set of movers only brought half of our stuff due to one of them needing to be transported via ambulance half way through (thankfully he is alright)).

The guys came to pick up the shed today. They said it ended up weighing a little over 6000 lbs. They had to remove it in pieces. Love the unobstructed view now

Inside the house projects have taken priority. The epoxy quote was $8k. We're going to hold off on flooring for now. Hoping to get the two post in there this summer.

How is the lighting? Looks like a 12' ceiling with Fluorescents on 6' spacing?

Ceilings are just under 14'. Not sure of the light spacing. There are 8, 8ft fluorescent lights. Really happy with how bright the space is at night.
