Looking to fill a gap in the current attached garage. Plan is to fill a corner with a 36” tool chest, the space currently has shelving above it that can move up for clearance but won’t accommodate a flip top cart.

Menards has a nice 36” but sadly they are a half days drive from me. Anyone have the Milwaukee 36”? I’d like to stay under $500, and plan to have a basic set of sockets, wrenches, pliers and screwdrivers handy in the box. I’d consider the HF but I hate to give up the shelving to accommodate the flip lid.

Any other boxes in the sub $500 range I should look at?

I have a 46" Milwaukee top and bottom chest at home and I'm very happy with it for my usage.

I don't think you'll find anything as nice or as deep in the price range.

My 36" is my weakest box (Mastercraft) because of the full width drawers with not heavy-duty enough slides.

At 41-42"+, the sizes are usually split into banks of narrower drawers.

My garage is only 8' wide in places. I didn't want to eat up another 2" that the tops take up when opened as that would narrow my center isle too much. Solution was to remove the long pin from the hinge and just take the whole lid right off the box. Done it to all my boxes now.

I'm in a similar situation where we're looking for a tool chest/cabinet to fill up a 38" wide area at work.
From what I've found, there are TONS of options at 27" and 41", but very limited when it comes to 36".

We're currently on the fence between getting a 36" Milwaukee or ShopMax combo or call it a day with a 27" combo instead, so I'm interested to see what else will be mentioned here.

I’m looking at the 27” US General and trying to decide if it will do what I need for $400 or if I should go bigger, I’ll have to look in the store next time I go.

If you are not in a rush to get one, have you considered a used 36” tool box? High end 36” wide tool boxes were more popular in the 1980s and they show up on the used market as mechanics retire or their heirs sell their belongings. For example, the Snap-on KR-555 as shown weighs in at 370 lbs. It is built like a tank. It is also friction slides, but with cleaning and rubbing on some paraffin wax, the are very smooth.

I have a 36" Masterforce (Menard's house brand, there are a bunch of threads about them.) stack. It's a great box, the roll cab is very nice. I don't love the drawer layout of the top cabinet, but it's well made and works fine. (It needs a deeper drawer.)

+1 on this, I would be looking for used 36" MAC or SnapOn from the good old days. Prices used can be fairly reasonable as not such popular size or layout for most users preferences today.
Plus sides are you getting proper well made box to size you really want, also it will retain more value over new store brand offerings .

Menards can ship the Masterforce cart but it would put the total price over $700. For a little less money you could get the Harbor Freight tool cart and leave the lid shut, turning it into a table top storage, there might even be some type of coupon for it. The lid to my Masterforce 30" chest has been closed for about five years due to a shelf above. I keep all kinds of **** on top of it.
