Well it's been a long time coming but this week everything has finally come into place to get started on my 36x48x14 workshop/garage. :rocker: After some long hard thinking I have decided to build a pose frame building. I was die hard all steel building until the engineered slab came into play. With my budget being about $35,000 the engineered slab would have been over half of that. I paused for a month or two and looked at some post frame buildings with a few with nearly 30 years age on them. they all where fine and had no issues with the posts. So i felt better about going that route.

I do believe I've found a great local crew to construct the building. Supplies are locally sourced as well so any corrections or issue should be quickly handled. Both the supplier and builder have great reputations here and feel much more comfortable after seeing their work that this is the right call. My builder is Moses Shetler who runs Evertrust Construction https://www.facebook.com/EVERTRUSTconstruction/
The local materials supplier is Midstate Metals http://midstatemetals.com/

I am working on as much as i can myself. I will be building the pad myself and the 180 cu/yds of fill are being delivered today and tomorrow. I have a bobcat with a 4 in 1 bucket that I will be stripping the topsoil with and spreading the lifts out for the pad. I have rented a ride on vibratory sheepsfoot roller to compact my lifts as they go in that will be delivered Friday evening. So i basically get to use it all weekend for a single days rental price.

I'll be taking some pictures and will fill in as I go along.

Sorry folks for the delay in posting. I was a Photobucket user and when I went to start uploading some images I stumbled across their new hot-linking policy. Needless to say I got frustrated and just didn't have the time to explore a new option at that time.

Over the past few weeks and dealing with some rainy weather I have the pad complete and the crew is starting today.

About 4 weeks ago I started the rough layout to get the pad started. My initial location would have taken somewhere north of 1000 cubic yards of fill to bring up to level. So after deciding on another location and considerably less fill(though more than i thought it would have taken) I started my rough layout.

Then after a few days of rain I was finally able to start cutting off the topsoil.

This back corner stake is just a few inches above ground level to the front opposite corner. So It was more out of level than I would have liked but this location was a toss-up with my fist choice so I didn't really want to to go elsewhere.

After that i was able to start the process of spreading and rolling in my lifts to bring the pad up. This is where the first problem came. The company I rented the sheepsfoot from called the evening before delivery to say they didn't have an available one within 500 miles that they could even truck in. So I made a couple of calls to some friends in the grading business that I have been consulting with on the pad. They both suggested to just put in 4 inches of loose and then get a bucket full of dirt and roll that in with the Bobcat. At that point i figured I could do three of those and not be too high that i could bring in the sheepsfoot without cutting any fill out. So that is what i did. I put in 3 4" lifts and rolled each one with a heavily loaded bucket both directions and every square inch. My guy delivering the fill gave me a several proof rolls with a fully loaded truck without any mark at all. So with no deflection with the proof rolls I continued on.

I did run into a bit of weather... Well it was a torrential downpour when spreading the second lift in. I ended up cutting all that loose material out to dry and had to give it a couple of days to start back. The Bobcat got a bit messy as it caught me before I could do anything with the loose stuff so I had to just get out of there.

Then that brings us to last week and the pad is complete and level within 2"

I did spread 16 ton of gravel on the pad to prevent a muddy mess before the crew came to get started. We did have several rainfalls after the pad was done so keeping it clean as possible once construction started is a must. I have a trailer load of straw to spread around outside until I can get the grading done around the pad.

The crew got here early this morning and by 10:00am had the building laid out and the post holes dug.

Inspection for the holes should be taking place now. They plan to pour the bases for the posts just after that then knock off to go enjoy the eclipse.

They guys where onsite and rolling again about 7:30am this morning. Didn't get a change to catch up with the crew this morning but they just checked in and the posts are set and they are waiting now on the cement for them now.

Thanks, guys. This has been a long time coming. I was originally hoping to be in a 40x60 but i just couldn't get there within budget. Moses and his guys will basically put the building in the dry. They usually install a foam board insulation but I had them deduct that and am just having them install a moisture barrier since the building will be insulated in a more conventional manner with bats and blown insulation. I just didn't think it was worth the extra expense at this time for so little R value. I'll be working on whatever I can from internal framing to pulling wire, plumbing runs, leveling the gravel base for the floor and prep work for the pour.

Had to run by the house while on a late lunch errand. They did get the concrete poured around the posts. They will be back tomorrow to start tying it all together.

There will be a walk in door and a single window but their original locations are changing since i have relocated the building from the initial planned location. I am deciding on those today and we will go over those in the morning.

More progress today. They made an early start but did get rained out around 2:00 this afternoon. Almost completed the walls and headers for the garage doors.

The crew finished up the initial framing for the overhangs and got the metal on the roof. They still need to finish the boxing for the soffit and then can start the rest of the trim for it.

I couldn't help but to pull the tractor in after brush hogging the field around the build site this weekend.

Looking good. Seeing your tractor in there reminds me of how nice the roof of my backhoe made for a work platform. I don't know if you can stand on your rig or not but consider making a solid platform up there for use in installing lights and stuff overhead.

As is i could not. The top is fiberglass and is quite flexible. that is an idea though. The ROPS would be plenty strong enough to support a platform. though i may be a bit short to effectively reach. Hoping to borrow some scaffolding for the ceiling work or maybe find some super cheap on craigslist or something.

I missed getting pictures yesterday since I got home way after dark. I arrived home today and all I can say is wow. Moses and his crew do amazing clean and neat work. I am so glad I chose them to put this building up. I wouldn't hesitate to call them back or recommend them to do another building. They put in a good days work and his crew (of what I think is 3) had this up basically in 5 full days. They just have the trim on the corners to add but will pop back in Thursday to put those on.

Wow CT, that was quick! Looks great, what's next? I'm still pecking away at mine. Work keeps getting in the way, lately I've only been getting two or three days a week to work on it.

The biggest thing for me is to get the building enclosed. So figuring out anything I need to stub up before the floor is poured like electrical and plumbing. Then of course getting that poured and finished. Once the floor is in then the roll up doors so the building can be locked. Then I plan to get some minimal electrical in with a few lights and outlets to get inspection passed. The full lighting and electrical build-out as well as actually bringing water down is going to be on the back burner short bit. I imagine this is going to be a several year process of getting things in there and the way I and them. We have a little one on the way in about 4 weeks so many other things going on as well. I'm thinking the place needs a name but I'm not good at coming up with this stuff.
