What are you gonna do with one?
I have used Shapeways a few times to make a few of my 3d CAD files. Very inexpensive and there is zero maintenance and upkeep costs...

We have one at school we used to print out and then cast a custom fence top. Very pricey for the plastic but very cool.

Use both 3D printing methods of SLA, Dimension machines and Objet technology.

Not the panecea (sp?) folks make it out to be but improves continuously. But truly has its place- otherwise i would not use it 30x plus/year.

You can also do metal printing combined with LASER and wire spooling.

btw- plastic printing IS Not suitable for firearms

These are called additive manufacturing processes..

$15 a pound is not that $$$ abs plasic
one unit can be had for about 1500 bucks

News to me lol the model we have uses 5 pound spools at 250 a pop so that's pricey to me but I'm sure there are more cost effective models. Cool

I can 3D print in white or black ABS up to 8" square by 10" tall with a .010" layer thickness for a cost of $10 per cubic inch of material printed, with a 3-day turnaround. This is approximately half the cost of Shapeways. PM me if interested.

The consideration youre missing is that you get what you pay for in regards to both material and machine quality. At the prices you quoted youre wasting money on junk. The semi-decent machines start at ~$5k and material is still considered fairly cheap at ~$30/lb.

I've looked at Cubify and Makerbot.. Really like the Cubify, bigger print area, multiple extruders and can do ABS and PLA. I'm waiting to see how the market matures a little more around these before jumping in. The bigger commercial ones do all kinds of different materials besides ABS/PLA but they quickly move in price. Lot's of possibilities with these..

Ive got one... have access to a makerbot cupcake, own a modified eventorbot, and a printrbot; probably building a rostock derivative soon ish

most arent "there yet" - still largely toys and for "fun" - but they are slowly refining into useable machines. Yes you can print something useful like a cellphone case, no gun smithing isnt there yet (unless your shelling out 20k plus on a statadyne).

If your thinking about the makerbot replicator - do your research. I'll leave it at that.

At the moment, my cnc couter is still a better tool for making things, but at some point - i do expect 3d printers will have their place in the shop...
