3G MIG Test Tips/Advice Welcome!!

Well, the title says it all. Besides 'practice' and 'under-the-hood time', if anyone's got any specific advice for a student trying to get a cert in 3G MIG, I'd be glad to hear it!

I think the root is the hardest for me. Spring Break is over and it's back to class and I need to really make some progress. I want to pass this thing!

I'm enrolled in a local community college program. The instructor is good, but I've found it never hurts to get other advice and input as well. Sometimes another person's 'slant' on it can be a real help.

Open root. .035 wire, 3/8" A36 plate, 75/25 gas, multi-pass, vert. up, AWS D1.1 code

go from bottom working upward, turn your temp down just a hair to have a cooler bead and course make sure everything is super clean

I have seen guys that i thought could weld better than me not pass a weld test because they didnt clean welds between passes.

Just watch the puddle to make sure you're tying into each plate and into the previous weld beads.

I have to do my unlimited thickness FCAW tests (2G, 3G and 4G) next week. 1-3/4" plate, 1/16" flux core.

why are you testing on 1.750" plate?

1" plate qualifies you for Unlimited Thickness.

Apparently, the school got a stack of 1.75 plates for free, so we're using that. I think they're spending more money on consumables than they would have spent on the right size metal though.

Dudes in the stick class are putting in upwards of 100 passes!!!

the instructor / dean should know better. one of them is trying to save some money on material costs ... and in doing so, they are wasting the time (and subsequently the money) of the students.

About 90% of mig work you can really blast it to it, this is one place you need to get the settings right. Look at the door charts on the machines, many of them are about right for V up
