What's the purpose of the big nut on the 3M holder?




I've been using the Taiwan holders from HF for 15+ yrs plus. I ditched the nuts, shortened the shanks, & loctite'd them in place. Never had a issue with them or excessive runout. Did this to reduce the height of them.

Was thinking about trying a 3M one but they seem to be much longer than what I'm used to. Unless that big nut is used for something else? They're also expensive, not sure if they are worth the price over what I'm using?

Fits a 5/8" spindle thread to adapt the 1/4" backplate by using the short screw

The bristle discs are used much like the wire wheels only much safer as far as not getting a piece of wire stuck in your body somewhere(ie your eye past your safety goggles).

OP...how do you like the Milwaukee die grinder...I am thinking of getting one...

I'm happy with it. Not a complete replacement for my air die grinders but the Milwaukee is much quicker to use. It's the size of the Milwaukee I don't like. I'm also not a fan of M12 tools much cause of the big handle grip size. But it's a great tool, I'd buy it again if I needed to.

Really though it's only the Fuel's that have the fat handles. Something like the brushed 2438 polisher/sander tool has a more narrow grip. Mode 2 is 8300rpm max. still it works pretty efficiently. Colleted die grinder does have much higher max rpms

For me it's any M12 tool, due to battery the handle can't get any smaller. M18 tools are more comfortable to me. I don't really have that small of hands, I can wear size medium gloves but usually wear large.

I wear a Medium glove most often. Now just my opinion but I do think the brushed tool handle grips are much more comfortable than the FUEL's. In fact that's was one the main reasons I went with Milwaukee about 6-7 years ago I actually gone out looking for the Makita (at the time was also the pod style) 10.6V impact driver and drill. And was disappointed uncomfortable how it felt in hand, The Milwaukee to me back then just felt right. When I progressed to 12v Fuel models a couple of year later it took a while to get used to the "fat" feel.

I have to say whenever I go back to use one my first brushed tools mostly the 2463 and 2462 and pick them up I have smile when I hold them.

And the 2438 polisher/sander is the same grip.

Honestly quite surprised that one wasn't released as Fuel model considering the steady run time a tool like might often get.

Just as an FYI the earlier M12's like my old 2410 drill have a fat grip like a Fuel
