I bought Rustoleum Epoxy shield from a discounter September 2004. Only paid $75 for three kits. I put this on the shelf and procrastinated for a bit.... Fast forward to this week and I decide to prepare the floor and call Rustoleum and the guy in customer service tells me how to date the product. Mine is 4.5 years!!!! So I am 18 months over the shelf life. Dang it! Has anyone done this? It was stored properly and never opened so should I give it a spin or throw it out and go to lowes and buy three new kits????

I would test a small amount in a hidden spot. Not sure how epoxy goes bad over time, so I'm not sure what to tell you to look for in the unmixed containers other than consistency.

Have it shaken first- then thoroughly stir the product. If the pigments dissolve back into the liquid, you should be ok to apply it. If they stay clumped together, I would discard it. As stated above, it is a good practice to activate and apply only a small amount as a test, in an out of the way area to see if it works.

Pitch it. Don't risk using old product. Nothing like having a pile of goo on your floor that does not cure. That is a REAL MESS. The problems that it can create will be about the worst nightmare you can think of.

Just my opinion.

I pitched 35 gallons of product not long ago and cost me a bundle to dispose of but I did not want to risk having a floor with problems. Most stuff has a 12 -18 month shelf life when stored in reasonable temps between 40 - 90. If you get out of that range STUFF will happen. That is why you got such a deal in my mind.....

I replaced it. Bought three new kits from Big Box Inc... Put it down last weekend and it went down good. It does however appear to really need a second coat to make it look really nice. Now I need to sand it and put down another coat...

Hey, Glad to hear it went down with no problems. Got any pics? I hear 100 grit on a DA Sander makes short work of it depending on how large the floor is. Just have to scuff it up.

Second coat down. :bounce: Looks so much better. The Rustoleum product should be a two coat process! When I get my digital camera repaired... I will post some pictures.
