That install driver looks handy. I know I've wished I had one on multiple occasions. I love my little Bosch 12v drills and wish I had gone for the Flexi-click w/right-angle attachment instead of a separate drill and driver. The Milwaukee looks quite nice.

Well ****.... most of the way through an update... far fingers swiped to stop the GJ app and it's gone

So the short story.... spent all day in the garage as used a day of vacation

- Finished the sub panel wiring so ready to run circuits

- Made this.. still stuff to do longer update on it soon

View media item 107779
- With a new home for that metal cabinet, the next span of pallet racking shelving came down... leaving a 6' long open section of floor... until I rolled machines into it!

I was hesitant initially on the usefulness of it, but a couple of my so-called friends who constantly spend my money by sharing new "things" I must have said this was in that "must have" category.....I think they were right. If I wasn't already down the path with M12 it would've been a bit more hesitant, but still worth it for me.

I haven't used it as much but it's super handy...need to get a "kit" put together that keeps the driver, a set of drill bits and a set of driver bits all together and just keep it in the house as the "house set" and then have my 18V stuff in the garage

Inlaws are in to see the grandkid....so means I get some extra garage time with two extra sets of hands...so trying to take advantage of it and get a few things do e

Freed up space and some cash with selling 735 planer now that it was replaced with the 15" unit

Started working on this art deco vintage Craftsman bandsaw. Was bought with the Walker drill press as a package deal and mounted on the other end of the table. I wanted the drill press but wasn't super excited about the saw but made the deal. Used it a bit, but also was seriously upgraded with the 17" Delta and I need the space so this will go to. In really nice shape if anyone is interested located in Omaha, PM me

Then started working on the next phase of the high uni-strut based shelving

Initial run to big box got me all I thought I needed in a couple sticks of strut and another stick of all thread

View media item 107821
However my lack of organization cost me time and productivity again as I thought I had the required strut nuts and 90 degree brackets for this shelf...nope. Back to box store after supper

View media item 107820
Thats where I'll end things tonight...goal for tomorrow is to get the last 2 cross braces in, all thread hangers installed and plywood for the top up. If I have a really good day will also get the last pallet rack unloaded and contents up onto the various high shelves to make the painting and conduit run easier

Looking tidier and it does look like a big space! I can see the overhead storage is helping. Keep it up it's gonna be great!

Looks like the MFT is almost the same height as you're other work surfaces?

Thanks for swinging by after a busy weekend in MSP! Looks like we both had productive weekends

Yes...most of the work tables are all 36" +/- 1/2". I'm going to make a "spacer" of sorts to get the MFT to the same height when its on the mobile hardware table. As I build new things, setting the work height at an intentional height will be important. For most of those things it'll be 36", some I have worked out in my head to be lower in order to store under other items...see how long till that leaves my head and gets converted to something more real!

Submitting this as another exhibit of why I shouldn't do aimless cleaning and minor shop projects while talking to a few select folks on the phone.

While pushing my drill press around I make a comment about needing a new task light for it, and I hear a little voice in my ear whisper "A 4" ring light could work pretty slick if it was mounted on the quill"....

So a couple days later guess what shows up in the mail box... and fit wise yes should be just right.... just need to come up with the mount design. Fortunately that voice in my ear who sent me down this path is also liberal with his 3D printer so may draw it up and get him to print it... once I figure out what I want of course

Wow! Removing the pallet rack made a big difference in the space. I might have to reconsider overhead storage.....

Thanks for swinging by!

I knew it would but still impressed with how much more open it feels! This is my first time having overhead space like this that feels "free" as it's high enough to not encroach on my workspace and very glad I started with it as a project so I could get things out of my way. I fully understand and admit that much of what's currently stored up high probably could(should) be gotten rid of...but it's not all mine to dispose of so while wife and I work that out hopefully this winter it's at least all out of the way. We had a really nice storage attic in the last house and don't have one here so much of what used to be in the attic is now in my garage....:dunno:

In good news today.....and not fully garage related I finally got off the proverbial fence and ordered one of these:

View media item 107866
For those not as well versed in nerd toys....3D printer from Prusa. I'm a firm believer in buy once, cry once and talked my brother into buying a printer(an Ender as couldn't wait for a Prusa at that point...tax stuff and all) for work end of last year which was quickly followed by the same for his personal usage. Within a year he sold his personal one and has the Prusa now and is much happier with it and the print quality....so I'm just going to start there.

I've been browsing Thingiverse and related sites for awhile knowing I'd end up with a printer....so excited that I finally pulled the trigger. Was already debating of taking the week of Thanksgiving off so this may end up as one of my projects for that week as I bought the "kit" vs the preassembled machine.

Do you plan to use for the workshop at all? If so then it's garage-related. :D Even if not, you should still share with us.

So what you're saying is you can print and mail me 3D parts for woodworking now?

:lol_hitti

I don't know anything about 3D printing but I've seen some pretty cool implements -- you should check out Bakafish's thread if you haven't already. He uses 3D printing in his woodworking quite a bit, including a homebrew System32/LR32 setup.

Well sometimes scope creep happens...

With a desire to heat and cool the garage eventually, wanted to get a better vapor barrier up and I wasn't about to rip down all the rock....so vapor barrier primer it is.

Scope creep started to be real when no stores in a 3 state area had 1 gal containers and the manager put a nice discount on the 5 gal....was only planning on priming and painting 2 walls this weekend. Now it may end up with a bit more.....

That "back wall" with primer on it...got it done prior to supper:

And after getting caught up on this week's Mandolorian episode...got the other wall done and started on the ceiling but got a sore neck

logan,

I feel like I'm chasing you this weekend! I'm getting everything prepped to start putting down primer on my project as well.

I got tired of cleaning dust this evening so, called it quits and just finished watching the latest Mandalorian episode with the Mrs. lol. Life is good.

Lol ok thats funny! We have some family staying with us and got them hooked on Mando after introducing it as "a western set in the future" as he's not a star wars fan....

3 nights later and they had watched the first season and were up to date in season 2!

Good luck on your painting! I don't enjoy drywall mud/sanding and am priming then painting right over the top without any fixing of defects or filling holes. Keep reminding myself its intended as a functioning garage...and I need to get it done this weekend while I have help watching the kiddo

The more I do this the stronger my dislike for people who cover up uninsulated walls in climates that need heating or cooling for substantial portions of the year....

View media item 107957
Going to see if I can get all the **** out of the way and access holes cut today so tomorrow can blow in the insulation in the walls and attic.

Really wish I had dug deeper prior to hanging the upper shelves to verify if cavities were insulated instead of assuming they were since they were nicely finished...live and learn

Well there are now 50-ish 4" holes around the ceiling of the garage

View media item 107963
View media item 107962
Goal tomorrow is to get walls and the attic blown in, rough math says need 20 bags or so of fiberglass

While I was cussing the prior owner who did this it clicked on why it was finished so nicely(and even the ceiling textured) without being insulated. This was one of the model homes when the development was new(15 years ago) so they had to have a pretty garage....form over function...ugh.

Drywall will get fixed with a roughly 1x8 trim board mounted to cover the access holes...open for suggestions on what color to paint it. White would be easy but makes me think "whats being hid with that?" Color seems more intentional....but not sure which one...will probably paint the baseboard the same color.

They normally use the garage as the “office” so it makes sense why it was finished nicely.

Nick let's talk in the new year after I get the machine dialed in! Don't think I have time for doing CAD work for others...but sending parts that are already modeled to the printer...yeah I can do that :)

And thanks for the recommendation! I hadn't seen that thread yet and find the renovation in Japan stuff with unique codes and local practices fascinating!

Thats what I'm thinking happened. It was 6 builders who did the bulk of the work in this development and each of the houses in our block was a model. As I've been thinking about it all the other houses that were models all seem to have nicely painted/finished garages while most across the street are a mix of single coat of mud/tape and some that have been primed.

In bad news...garage is an absolute mess now and its irritating the $h!t out of me but I'm sore as heck so probably not going to get much of it straightened up today

In better news...its a mess because father inlaw and I got insulation all blown in this AM. Didn't take nearly as much as I thought it would which was nice as it made a much bigger mess then I thought. I've done a number of attics before but this was first on finished walls. No remote on/off switch at the hose end made it a bit messier but I'll live

Ha! I was only joking but maybe I would take you up on that if I design something small (would pay you for parts + shipping of course). Totally understand on doing work for others when it's hard to find time to get your own stuff done... I have a 2 yr old myself after all!

No problem, Bakafish's thread is a good one on many levels. He's used 3D printing for some pretty clever woodworking applications a number of times, so that's what got me thinking!

Progress on your place is looking good as usual.

Quick update

Still don't have all the blown in insulation cleaned up.... but closer... stuff gets everywhere

Did get a round of top coat white up on a couple of the walls:

View media item 108017
Didn't think the walls were that dirty... until I saw this. Yeah...this will be a nice improvement.

View media item 108016
Fresh primer then topcoat white on the right of the door, left side the original color

So nothing crazy, but an acceptable white coat of paint was the last thing holding me up from running some basic conduit along the walls which means I might actually get to use my new subpanel and tools soon!

I do love modern logistics as barring a good up in Customs the 3D printer shows up on Monday! Leaves me a hopefully reasonable goal of getting the cluster of a garage semi put back together over the next couple of nights after the spawn goes to bed

Moved stuff around before I ran out of energy after a long work week. It looks worse but feels better in the garage

To clean off enough of the other flat surfaces so that they could move in a short time window....one had to get much worse

That is where I intend to assemble my printer next week though... so I have motivation to get things put away over my free time this weekend!

When are you adding the Kansas State Royal Purple pin stripes!!!
That's actually a discussion right now...

House divided here, wife is an Iowa State alum, I'm Kansas State, but it's known the garage is mine as I see fit... with the strong hint that my life will be more pleasant if she can park inside when weather is poor....I have free reign inside the garage.

So one of the concepts for the trim board to hide the insulation holes is a college color themed paint scheme with his and her colors on each side. It's probably going to happen, but not immediately, I just have too many other things that need to happen to make the space functional. Maybe once I get some electric run,the holidays past us and both the laser and the 3D printer going I will indulge myself

To work off my teams embarrassing performance against my wife's alma matter I exiled myself to the garage....darn

Had ordered (4) of the Wall Control metal pegboard wall panels to try in conjunction with some 3d printer tool holders. 3 of the panels up and bought a basic tool holder set from them as well to see what I thought. For now it works but the tool holders will be one of the first projects for the printer.

If I like this system the thought is to run it across the entire back wall, bottoms of the panels are 42" up to give room for surface mounted electric between it and the future workbench, will abandon the in wall receptacles.

Going to call this a successful weekend. We stayed healthy, there are sufficient leftovers in the fridge for a couple days worth of lunches and I once again have a clean assembly table!

View media item 108131
The chopsaw cabinets still need leveled out and paralleled, and I haven't cured the flat surface disease enough to get to the top of the toolbox and cut a new top for it....maybe a project for the upcoming long weekend? But we can park wife's ride in it again, I have a place to assemble the Prusa and things are starting to actually take shape in the garage.

Now to be truthful... its far from done....

View media item 108132
The wife's Volvo parks on this side and still lots to do but this area is now next. That angled workbench is coming down(holdover from prior owners) and short term the laser will sit next to the freezer. Freezer moves to the basement mechanical room when I get the energy to clear out a spot for it, once that happens the drill press toolbox station moves to where it is. Lots of small stuff to sort thru and find homes for...hoping the 3D printer can help in this area!

Well I finally made it through the thread. Great start on the new digs!

I'm jealous of the woodworking equipment.

Your sentiments about people being further removed from the farm couldn't be more true! Where is home for you? I grew up in Western NE on a farm/ranch. That 5020 is becoming a bit of a rare tractor.

Thanks for stopping by JCrock! Yeah, that game was a long ways from the peak of the Bill Snyder era where the offense found ways to click with overlooked players and Jr Comm College transfers. I'm optimistic about what the staff can do...and they've had some monumental challenges to overcome with covid and injuries...just burns it had to happen against my wife's team!

Appreciate taking the time to follow along and comment! I'm super excited to get the new woodworking equipment fired up(hopefully this long holiday weekend???), the rest of it is the result of a acquiring pieces for the last 13-15 years since getting out of college(yes I'm a youngin around here) and ready to use it for furniture and building "stuff" instead of remodeling the house....yeah it was stuff but just feels different when I'm building something new vs something "different" to fix prior sins

I grew up in North Central Kansas, about an hour northwest of Manhattan. Not quite middle of nowhere.....but there might be a sign directing you there as you leave town ;). Not as sparsely populated as Western KS which has more folks then most of Panhandle Nebraska....those are both as my Dad and Grandpa would say area where "even the jackrabbit packs a lunch".

The 5020 is a nice addition, it joined the fleet after I got out of college as needed something bigger to power the augers as they got bigger and it was the biggest, baddest "open station" Deere that didn't have a turbo. Wanted the open station for easier ability to fire up/shut her down for unloading semi's, wanted the turbo so we didn't feel bad about a shorter cool down period before shutting her down.

Worked so well that after the 1st season when we picked up a 2nd similar sized auger so we could dump into 2 separate bins at the same time(critical when harvesting both corn and beans at the same time) we got another 5020. Sheet metal isn't as cherry and it needed a new injector pump if I recall correctly...but they'll run that 13" x 115' auger all day long if asked to, then after harvest is done generally get put back into a shed for 9 more months until it's time to do it again as we just don't have any usage for them the rest of the year.

Good progress! Can't wait to see what you do with the 3D printer.

Just going to drop this here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3873322

:D

You S.O.B....lol

I was actually starring at that blasted opening the other day wondering why it was there in the first place! I'd love to understand the benefits...because "being able to see the blade is turning" isn't that important to me! I hadn't gotten to the "I dislike it so much I'm printing an insert stage" but now that the file is out there.....I'm going to have to try it!

Will probably take some trial and error to get that one figured out as that was done on a Resin printer that has tighter resolution...but I actually ordered a smaller diameter nozzle over the weekend in anticipation of wanting to try some smaller stuff so this'll be a perfect application! When I get it dialed in will reach out...just please don't hold your breath!

But to wet the appetite...if popular movies are based in reality there is a decent change I'm running Columbia's finest and the neighborhood is totally unsuspecting as the "mule" left it on the front porch:

View media item 108147
Ok...maybe not....but in the current world of Porch Pirates I'm not going to complain that they disguise the packages as it makes me feel that they're trying a bit harder. Unpacked it looks like:

View media item 108148
6-8 hours of assembly is the common numbers thrown out there...doesn't look like it but I'll trust their estimates more than "nah it's not that bad" wild **** guessing....

Hoping to be hot and printing something before Turkey Day....Would love to be printing while I'm sleeping on Tuesday night but that may be a stretch

Lol! I'm pretty sure the function of that hole is for blade changes. I haven't done one yet but my understanding is the blade drops down so the arbor is visible in the hole and can be accessed with an allen key.

I currently have blue painter's tape over mine. If you do end up printing a cover, let me know how it works!

Ha, sweet! I know nothing about 3D printing but it seems like such a cool application for a workshop. It will be fun to live vicariously through yours.
