Little while back picked up this very used welding table off craigslist. Love the great big legs and the price was good but it was covered in rust and pretty unsightly. It had holes drilled and tapped for a large vice and honestly I just thought it had a cool look about it. The owner had big plans for it but the city was buying 8 feet of his property to make a street bigger and within those 8 feet was his shop so it had to go. Me and the seller got it into the truck no problem.
It was when I got home by myself that I realized how fun this was going to be. It was about here that I got slightly worried. I should invest in a cherry picker.
After a few precarious movements and flips with car jacks i was able to get it right side up and prepared to give some attention to the top. $15 HF grinder and a wire wheel does fine.
Gave the same treatment to the legs and shelf support and got some primer on it.
I recently got a husky 60 gallon compressor, HF blast cabinet and have a few craftsmen red tool boxes so i figured red would be a good color choice. Used rustoleum red sunrise? I think was the name
Picked up some big straight casters from HF and welded them to one side in a way that the tire rested on the ground when the table was flat. I really wanted a good way to move this around and didnt like any locking casters I could afford. I have 90% of all of my tools on wheels and like moving them to clean and fit cars in when necessary so I came up with the simplest and cheapest way of being able to move this heavy *******. On the opposite side of the casters i added an angle iron support.
Then I made a steel cup that was about 1/2inch bigger in diameter than my aluminum floor jack. I used 1/8 inch sheet for the flat part and some flat stock I had lying around and curved it into a circle (or as close to a circle as I could manage) to act as a receiver for the jack. This way I can pull on it and not worry so much about the jack slipping out.
After I finished that up I threw some more paint on it. So far I absolutely love it, still lots to do to the table but this was the only thing that had me worried.
