Are talking a 4.5" (Metabo, DeWalt, etc.)grinder or a small air tool grinder? For my 4.5" I personally love the Dewalt .045 XP wheels. They cut fast and seem to last quite a long time...As for air tools, I don't really have a preference other than I like the .031 thickness.

The Walter are good, they cut pretty cool and last long. Thin is the name of the game, the thinner the wheel, the faster the cut for a given amp rating of the grinder, and it makes the cuts more accurate

I go through a ton of these, generally Pherd or Sait. I pretty much go with whichever they've got in the thickness I need. I've also used wheels from Home Depot when I've got to grab some in a hurry, but in general I've been less than impressed with how long they last and the price isn't often great.

The selection, quality, and price on grinder consumables are pretty much always better at a welding supply store than at a home improvement store. The staff is also much more knowledgable - I have yet to meet a Home Depot employee who can tell you why you would be better off with a 1/16", .045", or 1/8th" cutting wheel, and the folks at a welding supply can tell you that and a whole lot more.

The best prices I've seen are at industrial supply places, but only if you're buying 100 or more at a time.

Harbor freight abrasives are downright dangerous. If you want a commonly available brand that's a good value try sait.

I've recently started using the .040 Diablos from HD. My LWS sells .045 Saits but they're like .50 to 1.00 more each and I'm not sure they last much longer.

I recall that someone in the past linked to a Russian website that had pictures of accidents from grinder wheels breaking. It's probably best to avoid cheap wheels that ight shatter. :scared::puke:

i've had more than one HF cutoff wheel break.
luckily i was wearing a welding glove, jacket and a face shield. took a lot of the scrapnel from the wheel to the chest, and it still stung a little, even through the jacket.

IIRC my cutoff wheels are Norton. They seem to have treated me good over the years. Even tolerated some pretty dangerous side loading on accident without exploding. Yes I have seen a cutting wheel explode. :shocking:

not trying to critisize, but i dont think wearing gloves is a good idea with a grinder, although i can see why someone would, especially after it saved your hand! after reading different threads here, i got a skil 4.5" angle grinder, and have been happy with it so far.actually, i want 2 more, one with a wire brush and one dedicated to cut off wheels, would save me lots of time. as far as wheels, well, im reading this thread to get ideas also. sorry, cant help the op much but to say the hf and skil brand wheels havent impressed me.

We use Camel Grinding Wheels brand at work. I burn through about 1 every other day or so. I do A LOT of cutting. Mostly 1020 steel tubing. They last quite a while. I have also used SAIT and Metabo wheels with good luck. Granted, these are all 6" wheels on a 12.5 amp Metabo grinder, but I imagine it scales down to 4.5" just as well.

I had some HF ones back before I learned about the exploding (hasn't happened to me yet but I'm not buying any more anyway) and some Dewalts. Not sure the thickness of each but it was the same or very very close.

HF ones outlasted the dewalts. If I were to go get some new ones, I'd go Norton or Diablo based on whats local. I have a Norton disc for my 7" grinder and those last a long time.

i'm a one glove kinda welder, even in the coldest weather. :lol_hitti

my avatar pic was self shot last winter, approx 15*F in my unheated garage.

if i take my gloves off, i'll spend 10 minutes trying to find them again :willy_nil

:lol_hitti

the one thing i wont wear gloves doing is using a bench grinder or sander, i've been caught a couple times over the years....

I use Norton at work. They hold up great, cut fast and last pretty well. The last order we got in were labeled different than ones we had been getting but seem to be the same. I think the old ones were Norton Chargers and the ones we just got are Norton Bluefire or something like that.

I get all of my angle grinder discs from Roark Supply as they are a sponsor over on Pirate. Shipping typically goes out same day and great customer service.

Check out www.roarksupply.com , they're a vendor on several 4x4 sites and I've ordered from them in the past.

They carry pretty much anything you need for cutting/grinding/etc, at great prices. They also offer made in the USA options where available.

Edit: Beaten by F-117HWK...
