My great uncle passed on this 1957 Wilton Bullet to me; I figured it deserved the justice of restoration to (near) its former glory. Interestingly enough this vise was made the same year as the Farmall 450 in my profile.

Pictures of the original condition are in this post. The rest of the process will be below. As of 5/16 I have everything primered, and ready for paint. I'm planning on some shade of hammered gray or blue.

Disassembly & Wire Wheeling/Sandblasting

This is the first bullet I've taken apart. For 60 years ago, they really had it figured out. Modern chinas still don't incorporate the wedge (for the swivel lock) presumably for easy replacement if you strip it; nor the separate ring or the numerous solid through-hole locking spots. Wilton also nailed it by machining a groove which that c-clip esque plate rides in to extract the dynamic jaw as you screw the handle.

I am however missing the handle that went in the swivel lock; if anyone has a spare I would be happy to buy it off of you.

Much to my surprise, every bolt and screw came out with little to no effort. So I sad down with the wire wheel and preceded to knock off the rust (and what was left of the paint, not a ton). I sandblasted the crevices I couldn't get the wheel into easily, and used the wheel on the bench grinder for some of the smaller/rounder pieces. Ironically, I put the dynamic jaw and that ring it pivots on in another vise for cleaning; I probably should have chosen a different Wilton not the Colombian (pre buyout by Wilton).

An aside on the HF grinder:
Much to my surprise this grinder has been phenomenal. Oddly enough the wheel too (I think it cost more than the cheapest grinder) but I figured for all the grit and dust generated by a wheel I wouldn't leave my Fein or PC setup with one. It's held up for at least 2 years now and several 38" tractor rims, a set of skidsteer rims, etc etc. For those interested, it is literally the cheapest one they sell.

Priming, Painting, & Re-assembling

I was planning on using leftover Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer I already had. However I got about 30 seconds out of a can (from 2016) and it ran out of propellant. Oh well, it got shot with self etching Rustoleum instead, after a thorough cleaning with alcohol (to remove whatever abrasive and dust remained). It was about 85 degrees out, and 30% humidity, so you could literally watch the primer dry (and it wasn't all that boring).

I'm not 100% sure what to do about the "metal" parts; I doubt clear coat will hold up great but I've learned from previous vises high carbon steel will rust pretty fast, even if had a healthy coat of oil originally.

I hope I don't interrupt your thread, but you could try a thin coat of shellac on all the bare parts. I've seen that done a handful of times

Not at all; I have plenty of posts to edit. I was thinking that or clear coat but am worried it might gum up say the handle then get gouged when it doesn't allow it to slide and look like shi!t.

Any other input? Thanks!

I picked this one up yesterday. Part of a local online auction lot from a bankrupt metal fab shop that included 2 wire welders, a plasma cutter, three generators, a riding lawn mower, a couple of fiberglass extension ladders and a bunch of odds and ends...Wilton 1780...I got it all so cheap it's embarrassing .

I'm in the process of restoring a Wilton 1780 vise. Once I get the A2 jaws I made back from KMScott (who is graciously heat treating them for me for free!) I will be able to put everything back together.

Gary, you would be better off just uploading your photos directly to the website. When you reply to this discussion click on the "Go Advanced" tab, and then the "Manage Attachments" tab. This should allow you to easily upload your photos.

No problem Gary. I don't have any photos, but I can take some later on tonight and post 'em.

Picking them up Friday Maui. They took a extra week to heat treat this lot for some reason.

Thanks Kevin! I should be assembling the rest of the vise in the next few days, so your timing is good.

Here are a couple photos of the Wilton 1780 static and dynamic jaw towers prior to final assembly. I used Rustoleum Verde Green spray paint on this vise. I love this color. The dust cover was dented in several places, and it took some effort to pound the dents out and polish it up. In the background of the first photo you can see part of a Reed swivel jaw coachman’s vise that I am also restoring.

I'll get some better pics including w/out the oxidized handle over thanksgiving break.

Also, if anyone has a spare handle for the swivel lock...:bounce:

Interesting that they fitted a parker base? Better than the original wilton.

What makes you say that?
Tho maybe that would explain the whitworth thread!

As to why I think it is better than the original wilton? I'm fairly certain that the swivel base is off of a parker vise. Is there a bolt that screws the swivel base to the bottom of the vise?

Yes there is IIRC. it's been a year since I stripped it down!

Then there is one stud and the new swivel lock from Andy. A replacement base would explain a lot.

Were the originals flimsy?

The wilton swivel bases are nothing more than a ring. They can crack pretty easily.

I never did upload pictures of the completed 1780 vise, so here they are. And thank you again Kevin for heat treating the jaws!
