I have a question regarding 4/3 aluminum wire. My barn, has a 60 amp panel, that is currently being fed by a 12/3 direct bury wire (I know, and the guy I bought the house from was an electrician!) My question is, what kind of load can a 4/3 aluminum wire carry? It's about a 100' run from the main panel. The 4/3 is already run, but not connected. I know copper is the better choice, but that's a big expense and the aluminum is already there... Should I hook it up, or start over?
I should say, the barn is actually my shop. I have a 220 compressor, and a welder out there, so I want to get it right for sure.
