4.5" cutting wheels

Does anyone have an East coast brick and mortar store recommendation for cutting wheels for a 4.5" grinder? Thanks in advance.

i have been doing a lot with cutting wheels the last year or so and i swapped to WALTER products and they seem to last longer / less damage prone and good bang for the buck .

my local welding shop has there products on the shelf all the time .

In a store, not really where im at. Even the “nicer” brand the LWS sells are not very good. Ive been ordering benchmark abrasive stainless steel cutoff wheels in a 50 pack for $25-30 on amazon. They seem to last longer than any other brand ive tried.

Any BRAND name. Personally I like Walter and Klingspor

Just picked up a small box last week. Three times the cost of no name **** but minimum five times the life and performance.

And arguably a better chance of NOT exploding and taking off half your face.(if that is of any importance to you. ) [emoji16]

Klingspor has a good name too when it comes to abrasives. But there are plenty of decent tool companies who put their name on **** abrasives.

Years ago, I was helping a friend out with a project that involved some cutting. He brought a 10 pack of DeWalt discs. Halfway through, ALL of his 10 discs were gone, so he asked if he could borrow one of mine. I gave him a slightly used Metabo disc. He was able to finish the other half of the cutting, and still have a little of the same disc left at the end.

I agree with his conclusion: Pferd (Pronounced Fert for all of you non-German speakers). It literally means horse.

That’s what I just brought. Showed up the next day. 50 pack for 40$ CDN. For that price I am happy, other than I should is ordered 2!

I consider them low/med grade China imports.

Lenox metal max is what I have used lately . Less mess fewer sparks and they cut very well !

I bought one on sale and loved it! Told everyone that was the way to go. No wear so you NEVER lost cutting diameter. Provided faster, cleaner flawless cuts. Until it didn’t.

They got dull too soon and even though they still cut you came to realize they required more EFFORT and took forever to cut.

In conclusion. Expensive. Great when they are brand new, but they go downhill fast. It’s just deceiving because you’re not wearing the diameter down like an abrasive wheel.

I apologize to everyone who heard me say this was the cats *** a year ago.

I use Diablos and get 'em at Home Depot. $3 and change. I removed the guard long ago and now I buy 6" cutoff wheels for basically the same price as the 4.5's.

For the 4.5 and 5" grinders, I just use whats available at the parts stores. There are large wall displays with different sizes. They dont break and have reasonable life. Not sure of prices as it goes under supplies on a parts account

For the larger sizes, I use Walter. Best brand that I found that is available locally. Long life and less prone to chipping. Probably equally good results on the smaller sizes as well

Most of the DeWalt wheels, i have seen are made in Canada. No idea of the performance but they dont come from that one big China factory that makes all grinding wheels. Just kidding but seems like there is not a heck of a lot of difference between imported Asian wheels

I’ve been using these and they work good and last quite awhile. I haven’t used an abrasive cut off wheel since I started using these.

Diamond steel cutting discs can be had for much less than that. How about the $15 two-pack above?

I paid about $30 for my first steel cutting diamond wheel. Still haven't worn it out yet.
The plus side is there's no chance of shattering, and there's no grit coming off, so it makes MUCH less dust. It seems to cut slower, but it could just be because there are less sparks.

The metal max or Diablo type disks are great and outlast by many many times abrasive disks. They do cost many many times as much, though. I don’t do enough metal cutting that any extra cost is an issue but understand it could be for some.
