4 cycle string trimmer

Now I'm curious. Why?

I use them to manicure my lawn and almost never for tall weeds and grass. Sorry to brag but I'm a surgeon with one. I have always used a curved shaft trimmer that when looking down on it the hub turns clockwise.

I have a gas only craftsman and an 18 volt makita. Both straight shafts. Using the electric more and more and more. I do have various attachments for the gas unit but I’m becoming an electric convert. Of course I don’t have acres to trim but electric does everything I want so far. Just added a little makita blower. Small but works well.

I like the straight shaft trimmers, it seems like its easier to trim under large trees for me. I had a Stihl FS 76 for about 15 years and I replaced it with a Stihl FS 130R 4 stroke, that you mix the oil 50 to 1, and no crankcase oil. I love it. It has a lot more torque than the FS 76 had. I've had this one for about 17 years and it still runs fine.

Is it just me - or is there a reason why leaders in the industry don't offer 4 cycle trimmers? Is there a reason why?

I'm a Stihl guy. Find the power level you require and the handle style you like... and run MotoMix...

Have you read anything in this thread? The majority of Stihls pro trimmers sold in the last 10 plus years have been 4 stroke, aka the 4 mix.

The open box MDT Select Series 25cc 4 cycle blower arrived last night

Added the supplied 2.03 ounces of SAE30 and filled up the tank with gas

Instant start and smooth quiet idle

The engine was powerful and sounded great

It does weigh alittle more than my old 2 cycle ryobi, but seems much more of a solid machine

I'm sold on 4 cycles

The trimmer and blower both work great

Yes. They are a tad heavier but are also more powerful that my old 2 cycle setup

I think all we have had is two cycles. So can’t help with that part. With that I’ll put my recommendation for a straight shaft. For some reason most people I’ve met recommend bent shafts but I got a few of those from the curb and used them they hurt my back. I like the straight shaft it is also supposed to be stronger.

Don’t let anyone talk you into the battery stuff though. We bought a Milwaukee and the supplied battery and stuff man was it underpowered. We used it twice and returned it not worth bringing home. We haven’t had a gas powered one do us bad if the maintenance is kept up on it like changing the plug every year and draining the gas out at the end of the season. Looking for a good gas one probably going to get a Stihl or Echo.

Without going into too much detail; If you like the Honda-powered 4T trimmers (which includes some Husqvarna models), then you'd better get them soon.

I'm still on 2 stroke here except for my Honda powered mowers. Stihl blower, straight shaft trimmer and 16" chain saw. The blower and trimmer I run Shell V-Power which is ethanol free, and Stihl's own 2 stroke oil. Chainsaw gets motomix because it's barely used. They always work and that's really satisfying for me. I've had zero issues with them. I cannot stress enough to make sure you're not running ethanol in a carb'd engine, 2 stroke or 4.

My EGO works great on my 1 1/4 acres. Sometimes I use the EGO push mower in the front ditch, then the trimmer and it lasts the whole time. I haven't had to do anything to the mower except clean the bottom. I haven't done anything to the trimmer except charge the battery and add more string. Take an 8' length of string, push it through the holes and get it even on both ends, push a button and it winds itself in. Can't be any easier than that.

I really like the 4 cycle blower

The trimmer will take getting used to, since I always had a curved unit before and the 4 cycle trimmer is straight

Both motors have a unique sound compared to the 2 cycles
