4 or 3 wires for old motor?

I have an old motor that draws 17 amps at 220. I am installing a new 30 amp 2 pole breaker and using 10/3 wire.

Question, is there any advantage to using the neutral? Meaning is it the plug and receptacle that dictate the benefit of 4 over 3 wires, or is it the device?

I am switching out the plug on the motor, but I am guessing if it is not wired with a 4th wire there would be no point in my wiring the circuit that way and getting the 4 wire plug and receptacle.

In fact, if my basic knowledge of electrical codes doesn't fail me, I am guessing that would be a no no and misleading similar to a 3 plug receptacle that is not grounded vs a 2?

A 240 volt motor does not require a neutral, save money & use 3 wire devices.

The only time a 4th wire (neutral) is required is when the device also runs off of 120v, such as a dryer.
