4 post lift pics?

Hey guys,

Anyone have pictures of 4 post lifts from beneath a car? I'd like to see how much room is actually available betwen the runners for working on the car. My garage isn't nearly big enough, nor tall enough for a 2 post lift (just a regular 2 car garage) but I'm considering a 4 post lift if I think it will actually be useful.

Thanks!

- Andy

Andy,
I don't have any pics on this puter but I can tell you there is plenty of room between the rails.
I have pulled the frame out from under my 67 GTO, pulled the trans from my 84 Monte Carlo.

No problems here.

I have the BendPak HD-9-B and the width between the ramps can be set at either 37" or 43". The ramp without the cylinder underneath it is bolted but can be unbolted to allow for moving that one ramp even wider, if need be. Keep in mind though that you can obviously only go as wide as the narrowest track width of your car.

ovilla - I just set up my HD 9 - XTW and am just fooling around with it. What kinda cars would you widen it out for? ALso, I just figured out I can move the ramps to either end - that's awesome. I had thought everything had to come in from one side.

e-tek - I've widened mine a bit to do an engine drop on one of my 914's to take care of an oil cooler leak. The engine in it is basically the same one they used on the 70's VW Microbuses and is a wide horizontally opposed air cooled four cylinder engine (Porsche just made some refinements and added fuel injection to the 914's). Anyway, I know a lot of corvette owners set up the ramps to be as wide as possible due to the wide track on the rear. I've been fine so far with my Maxima and Honda Odyssey and just keep mine at 37" apart.

Hey, how easy is it to move your Galaxy on the lift with the casters? The casters will most likely be one of my next purchases. I'm just trying to decide what I'm doing with my garage doors. I might get new insulated doors with windows along the top. Even if I decide to not get new doors right now, I'm still going to order a high lift rail kit in the coming month. I really like the idea of being able to move the lift around the garage as I have it installed in the 3rd bay all the way to the right.

I haven't had a car on with the casters yet, but as soon as I put em on with no load it was VERY easy to move. The BendPAk casters are 5 inch hard rubber - much better than other I've seen (some of which are in-line skate wheels!). My shop is 24x40, or 2x2 cars...so my moving would be mostly to get it out of the way, or to clean up, etc.
Hookups where a concern - I've wired and run my air hose over the power tower, which is centre shop - so it'll be easy to access, but I'd have to add extensions if I move it to a different stall.

I have some great under carriage photos, but the file size is too large for their server. If you'd like to email me at [email protected], I'll email them to you.

I just finished putting my 67 Galaxie 500XL on the lift. At first I had the ramps at the narrow position but the tires would have been right on the outer edges, maybe even over a scoatch. So I widened the ramps to the second position and it was perfect. Very happy already I went with the Xtra tall and wide! :)
As for height, I'm 6'2" and in my 11 foot shop I can easily stand under the Galaxie on the lift with about 6" to spare to the ceiling. As well, at first I had the ramps set to rise with the lift, but then they were right at Forehead height :( They are easily removed, so off they came!
I'll post some photo's right away here.

e-tek - I've got a 50' ceiling mounted air hose reel and a 50' 220 line that I made so that I could move the lift anywhere in the garage. Anyway, if later on you decide to buy a rolling air jack, do look into the Bendpak RJ45 (4,500 lb capacity). The rollers on the sides are adjustable and will pull out easily to the wide 43" ramp width that you're now at. Also, I must say that it's the perfect complement to the lift. Not sure how you're jacking up cars now, but it really makes for a nice set up.

BTW, I have a friend with a 4 post lift that simply lowers the whole car onto 6 ton jack stands and that's how he does tire rotations or anything else that requires all wheels off the ground.

Thanks for the close up pics of these lifts. I contacted Bendpak to see about getting a four post lift built that would have a higher lift capability than their advertised models. I wouldn't be able to stand up straight under even their highest lifts and I wanted to see how the posts were constructed. These shots help a lot.

BooUrns - How tall are you? Also, keep in mind that you'd be standing under the vehicle, not under the advertised height, which is normally the bottom most portion of the ramp in it's fully raised position. The ramps are a good 4" tall and then you still need to take into consideration the height of the bottom most portion of your vehicle, which collectively can give you maybe another foot of height. Finally, to make really tall lifts I think they also need to be much longer. How long is your garage?
