4 post lift style differences which is better?

A used 4 post lift came up for sale today, it has the horizontal hydraulic ram across the top of the posts on one side. I'm not sure if it's just alignment lifts or older lifts, but it seems like the newer lifts you see don't have this horizontal cylinder. Can anyone give me any insight into these two designs and why they do it one way versus the other?

The newer lifts do have a horizontal cylinder. It’s mounted under one of the ramps, so you can’t see it unless the lift is elevated, though.
