4 way dimmer switch?

I thought I found a good thread on this previously but can't refind it. Thought it said I could use a 3 way dimmer switch but it has to be installed at a specific switch location, perhaps the closest or first switch to the power source? Anybody?
(I have 3 light switches. )

The dimmer can replace one of the two 3 way switches. It just can't go where the 4 way switch is.

And if you want a dimmer that can be controlled from ANY of the 3 locations, it can be done with a zwave switch (or other similar remote controllable devices). Just FYI

Doesn't have to be wireless. Leviton Wi-Fi switches have a head unit and remote units. The wiring diagram is different, but it lets you dim from all locations.

Yeah, thats what I meant.


There is one 'dimmer' and the others are remotes. aka 'remote controllable'

They dont need to use the Z-wave or wifi capabilities to control.

I just went through this in my house, I was installing a Jasco smart dimmer switch (and the accompanying Add-on switch) to control the chandelier. The master switch is downstairs by the front door and the slave switch is upstairs in the hallway. The whole time I thought I was replacing a 3-way switch. I couldn't get the smart switch to work at all. Turns out that it's actually a 4-way switch and that third switch is on the other end of the hallway. The simple solution was to flip the third switch and just not use it. So if you want to go with a smart dimmer switch, it's an option as long as you don't use the third switch. You can control the dimmer from either the master or the slave, or from an app on your phone as well.

Good news is that another slave is cheap.... I couldnt sleep knowing it was wired as you describe. Even on your place!

What do you mean? I didn't touch the wiring of that switch. I just flipped it and now everything works as it should.

Not familiar with Jasco. Many z-wave switches just need a single control line from one slave to the main dimmer. Existing 3/4 way wiring will let you add the slave controller...for example:

My Jasco is a Z-wave. But the slave requires the load and one traveler to be connected together. So I don't know if I could simply add another slave or not. But simply flipping to he switch into the "other" position makes the master and slave Jasco switches work just fine.
