Question for the tool box experts out there.

I am looking at getting a 40" to 44" wide rolling tool box but want one that is 24" deep. I am sure the high priced brands such as Snap-On, Matco, MAC, Lista, etc have them but am not looking to spend that kind of money on a new box. Craigslist is a possibility for the above named brands in used condition but any thing reasonably priced seldom shows up or stays long on my local Craigslist.

I have searched the net and posts here but have not come up with much in those sizes in the cheaper brands such as HF, Viper, etc. I did find a International Pro Series model PRB 4213 at Lowes Canada that looks reasonable.

I would prefer 40" to 44" rather than a 56" wide since I would like two of the smaller boxes which would leave me with some more flexibility in moving/changing out boxes. These would be for home use only and garage space is not a concern. Any suggestions on any brands/models I maybe missing?

Thanks in advance

NathanC,

Do you know if the Lowes in Niagara Falls Ontario has International boxes that I can actually lay my hands on to see how they are? Or for that matter any other place close to NF, Ft Erie or St. Catherines areas?.

I will be in NF Ontario a week from today for some dinner and some gambling with the girlfriend. I can probably convince her to run over to Lowes with me since she knows she going to be getting some jewelry that day . For some reason :dunno: jewelry gives a her a more lenient view of my tool hunts :D

The lowes in NF does NOT have any in the store I think it's only online. and there is nowhere else around here that I know of that has them but princess auto in Hamilton but those ones are the cheap Chinese ones NOT the Canadian made ones!

Personally I bought mine online and my brother bought his off the tool truck so their not really easy to go see in person. hope this helps

Ive never seen any Lowes stores carrying SPG Int. boxes, must be only online. To my knowledge even the Princess Auto sold SPGs are Cdn made. Although Princess Auto does have a Chinese store brand that to my knowledge has nothing to do with SPG. Very few of SPGs boxes are Chinese. Mostly just hand boxes, garage cabinets and Stainless Steel models. Sears in both Canada (in store) and the U.S. (online only, stores carry Waterloo) carry SPG rebranded as Craftsman. Also CarQuest & NAPA in Canada both can order SPG, not sure about U.S. stores. RONA is another retailer that carries them, but usually stock is limited to one or two 26 inch boxes. Several tool catalogues and independent tool trucks have access to SPG as well.

If interested I can pm you the name of a tool truck that has several clearance models in stock, and if he doesnt have what you are looking for, he can order you what you need.

the ones at princess auto might be Canadian made but they feel cheap last time I was their and looking at them. there nothing like the professional series my brother has or like the one I have. besides I don't think they are 24'' deep like the OP wants. I think even one of them was sliders :lol_hitti

It will be tough to find a 40+ inch wide box that is 24 inches deep for cheap. Like you said, its tough finding a deal on a used one that isn't sold by the time you see it. I was looking for a similar box a few years ago and my problem was either I couldn't find one deep enough or somebody wanted too much for a used box. I ended up getting a new Cornwell CTB46BBL. Retails for 2500, but if you have a dealer, you can get one for cheaper. its 46 wide by 26 deep. Might be more expensive then what you were looking for, but it is a well made box.

@NathanC and Gregg33,

Thanks for all the help. You guys have done a lot of the leg work already:thumbup: I will probably head to Sears across the border and see if they have any Craftsman on the floor that are Canadian made to at least get an idea of the International boxes. Then I can sort through all the re-badged boxes to find the cheapest. Most likely the International badged ones will be the most reasonable.

@ the Matts, those Cornwells look like they fit the bill but I don't think I have ever seen a Corwell truck around my parts. Plus more than I want to spend on a single box basically site unseen. But very nice set-up GTA Matt.

I have even called some of the local supply houses and they said they carry few boxes. Their reason was the vehicle guys are buying the big three, the DIY guys are buying at Sears and Lowes etc, and the manufacturing guys are just ordering what they want or used before. Thus no reason to stock anything on the floor.

Thanks for all the help guys, ..............the search is on

WNYflyer: here is that tool trucks catalog on page 95 you will find prices on international boxes. the 42" models are reasonable. 1200 - $1700 depending on what model you get. http://www.g2sequip.ca/Catalog/1-176-ENG-JF.pdf

btw: Its normal for it to take a while to open it's like a 200 page pdf

Edit: here's a SHD series which is very very strong and well built, almost as good as some of the top of the line snap on's. for $1850 http://www.costco.ca/SPG-Internatio...hest-and-Cabinet-Combo.product.100018871.html

And here's the company catalog so you can look through to see what you like: http://www.spginternational.com/client/uploads/catalogue/english/index.html

the 46x24 craftsman cabinet goes on sale for 1500.00 all the time but it still seems a little expensive to me...apperently the drawers hold 200lbs each but I have been told different

Yes it's the "Toolbox" I'm referring to, James has been good to me when I've dealt with him. And yes I agree the Princess Auto SPG's are economy grade for sure.

WNYflyer no problerm, glad I could be of some help. Ironic that I often cross the border to buy tools in U.S. Sears stores.
