Not sure if this is the place to post this but I have been trying to find similar garages in the garage gallery with little success. My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a house with a garage I am very happy with. Don't want to jinx it but want to be as ready as possible to get this new garage fitted and workable. (also very happy for my understanding wife) Coming from a 24' x 24' I think this will fit me much better.

The house needs a bit of work but my plan of attack is to set up the garage as my base of operations. Off of the appraisal it is 40.5' x 17' with a full upstairs and a nice power run (60 amps IIRC). I will doing mostly automotive type work and plan to setup the upstairs as more of a wood working/office area.

I attached a scale diagram of the basic idea I have in my head. The diagram is just off the top of my head so it isn't perfect. For the cabinets I plan to use IKEA 36" with a piece of butcher block across the top.

My biggest things are do you think cabinets on both sides will work with a car in the middle? (enough space to work on the car?) Any space saving storage ideas that you wish you had put in or put in that you really enjoy having?

I have a 20 w x 23 d shop. I have tools & bench on both long walls. What remains open is about 14-15 feet. I can put one car in the center, open both doors & work on it with ease. If you got your area down to 11 wide I think it would be tight. I would put all tools & benches on one wall & the end .

I am hoping it won't be too hard to get things upstairs using the front door. Maybe I will offset the built in ikea cabinets and then put the movable machines across from them. The plan is only to have one car in the shop at a time but we will see how that turns out.

Have you thought about building some type of trolley chain fall system out the upstairs door to get equipment in and out of the shop? You can also use it to get lumber and stuff up there.

I'd definatley keep all cabinets and benches on the left and back side

Fyrme I have thought about it but will have to wait till I am in there to do some planning. In my head if I can get stuff into the back of my truck then it isn't that much further up to get into the upstairs door.

I forgot to mark on the diagram but next to the stairs is a chimney and wood stove so I can't put too much on the rear wall. I need to get some more pictures. They dormed out part of the upstairs and made it much more workable.
