The Shop

Just purchased a 50' deep x 60' wide fixer upper on the cheap. Started shoring up the roof and reinforcing the perimeter columns. Cement flooring is already in place and will be dividing up into 3 bays. Will be running much new wiring and lighting throughout. Bay # 1 is will be rented to a custom woodworker. Bay # 2 will keep for the toys and will be adding a 12'W x 10'H power steel door and a 4 post lift. There will be a metal fabricator in bay # 3. More pics as we progress. What kind of broad area ceiling lighting do y'all like ? I would like to steer away from flourecents. TIA 77tony

WHY???

The stock answer is to use 4 or six tube T8 fluorescent fixtures. Second choice is to use T5HO fixtures, lots of choices. In terms of efficiency the fluorescent will beat anything else hands down.

How high will the lighting be mounted? Metal Halide is a second choice (which I myself have, but they are mounted 15 ft plus off the floor and Its my own place and I didn't want to spend a bunch on lighting) However, MH is not as efficient as fluorescent (but closer than many like to think). but MH won't work on lower than about 12-15 ft to the bottom of the fixture, and add another 2 ft above that for fixture height.

With you on the flourecents. Picked up (13) T-8's last night and will be running T-8 daylight bulbs. Next up-a dividing wall with 6" studs, 50'L x 14' T and building in a 36" steel entry door. Installing a 12' W x 10' tall steel door with power for the middle bay. Also adding an existing slider window (with pop in screen) in the new wall to bring in some natural light and air flow. More pics soon. T
