Holy ****, that *****.

I've never seen a pole barn attached to a house with footings before. Is there anything special that needs to be done in a scenario like this?

To go post frame we had to have an engineer approve the plans. It was a pretty simple process to get approved.

We got the mess cleaned up today and he is going to get the trusses all reset and plumb tomorrow. They have to be removed and holes dig out.

Definitely a bummer! Thankfully you have an insured builder. Keep after it,this is going to be a great shop. We can't wait to see the progress.

Bummer to see this happen. Happened to a friends shop this fall as well. 60x120 with 4 ply 2x8 columns. Snapped all the columns and took down all the trusses. Then another barn of his caught fire this past weekend.

How long are they saying before you get new trusses on site? Also, do they just backfill with dirt or do they put crushed stone around the base? I ended up packing mine with washed crushed stone to worry less about them rotting out.

That’s some bad luck for your buddy. They just back filled the posts with dirt. I like the crushed stone idea though to help with drainage.

We are waiting on the insurance to come out and do their thing. The lumber yard said they are waiting to see where the money is coming from before they get the trusses going. They said it will only be a 2 day turnaround for the trusses. Fingers crossed that the insurance process is smooth.

Bad news on the setback from the wind damage. Hope you can get some work done before the weather turns too much cold and snow.

Round two starts tomorrow. It took a few weeks to get everything settled with the insurance and then another few weeks to get the trusses back on site.

I would highly encourage anyone who is doing their own building or hiring out bits and pieces and doing work yourself to get a rider on your insurance to cover anything like this.
It all worked out in the end and nothing out of my pocket.

We have a decent break in the weather the next few days so he is going to work tomorrow and try to get it all closed in by Tuesday.

I can’t complain to much. Stuff happens, I am still getting my shop. I probably lost my window for concrete until spring though.

They have been a little gun shy the last few days. It’s been pretty windy around here. Tomorrow is suppose to be real nice and no wind.

They did manage to get the gable truss up today and then winds picked up.

Good thing your builder had insurance for sure. Bet he's being even more careful this time around.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Cheers Randy...

Another day of progress. 0fdfe31a768b779a226936b0a7afd951.jpg0d7b28b84c029a6e09094410ba984da9.jpge173eed67f4d37ad4f3e28f615e468a0.jpgca26c7495636059dcf272c50a9c45ad1.jpg086e21dee52d815c74783d55baa41b67.jpg

They are optimistic to get all the sheeting done tomorrow. It’s suppose to rain so we will see.

Glad to see progress being made. That's going to be an awesome space!

Can ya post a photo that includes the house? I've been curious about scale.

Thanks.

I'm interested. I'm in the planning stages for mine. Interesting to connect it via a breezeway. Will have to talk to the zoning department about +/- for that option.

Good progress today. It was a 55 degree day here today. Turned the ground into a muddy soupy mess. They have about a day and a half or so left.

That place is huge; awesome! How much length of the 60' is attic-room truss vs scissor?

What a bummer about the wind damage; that must have been really hard to see. Glad you're back on track relatively quickly.

30 feet is attic space. It has two 10 foot dormers on each side. A total of 800 sqft. I also had the builder vault the ceiling the full 40 ft width from dormer to dormer?

They have an odd way of installing the trusses. No blocking in between and little strapping....

They made a little progress today. The whole roof is sheeted and the dormers are finished. The only thing left is the roof for the breezeway and frame out the garage doors. Then his guy is going to do the shingles. dc4ac05c4f9afc96c48b63e3de82e51b.jpg

Then I get to take over. I ordered the siding the other day and hopefully I can get the garage doors one soon.

The framers are finally done. I have the roof supplies, siding, and garage doors all ready to go now. I am going to get the garage doors installed first. Then maybe start on the roof. I am really debating if I want to do it or hire it out. It’s a big job with very little help.

Looks amazing.

My city only allows for outbuildings to be a total of 50% of the square footage of the dwelling.
I already have a 1 car detached and a 10x20 shop on my property so I couldn't build detached without tearing something down and even if I did, I would have gotten roughly a 2 car garage sized building out of the deal.

But 1400sqft of garage attached to a 1500sqft house. No problem, permit approved. Their only concern is that I am going to illegally convert some of the space to "dwelling" after, they warned me they will be watching closely for that.
No problem as far as I am concerned, it is all garage and that is all it will ever be.

I got the breezeway shingled. I just need to go pick up my ridge vent that was back ordered and then I can put the cap on.

b74875f4dbc582e96c55414905d0a627.jpg

Then we had some snow blow in overnight so I won’t be getting anymore of the roof done until it warms up a little. So today I got one of the garage doors up.

That gadget in the last picture my dad made. We hook it up to the winch of my truck and it has a sled that rolls up that we can stack bundles of shingles on.

If you are acting as your own contractor and building with a bank loan secured by the property you will most certainly need a "Builders Risk" insurance policy.

"Builders Risk" is a term policy that covers losses during construction. The one negative for self builders is the length of time it usually takes to complete a project. "Builders Risk" underwriters do not look favorably on dragged out projects.

I think your garage door threshold is set too high. I have limited knowledge on pole barns, but I ran across this article on slab height while researching building a pole barn myself.

The concrete is going to be 2 inches below the top of the skirt board. That’s where the door is set.

Cool. Didn't mean to tell you how to live your life. My eyes were a bit out of cal, pic looked like the door was set at the top of the skirt board.

I got some insulation up on the walls yesterday and today and got one garage door operational with the opener. The other is set up on the track just no opener installed yet.

I got that whole wall done and three rows on all the rest of the walls. I just didn’t get a picture of it.

What kind of insulation is that? It looks like it has a finished face, will you be drywalling over that? What is the R value? It appears it is the same depth as your girts (assume those are 2x4s?). Are you installing a vapor barrier?

Do you plan to heat/cool the garage?

It’s just a plain white foam. It’s 1.5” thick. Has an R-6 value. My ultimate goal is to spray foam the entire barn but I am having a hard time getting someone out to give me a quote.
