Back on the roof, we had a break in the weather after about a foot of snow.



I have pretty much laid every shingle by myself. My dad has been a huge help. He made a lift to get the shingles up to the roof and occasionally gets up and helps. The forecast is looking good to get this done sooner rather then later. As luck would have it all the nicest days seem to be the days I am stuck at work for 24 hours.

No. It pretty much is what it is. Doing it this way was about the only way to get the size we wanted.

I am still plugging away. Roof is done finally and in the process of getting concrete done. Concrete crew should be be done prepping Monday. I have a few days to run all the pex for the floor heat. Pouring Thursday or Friday.

Do you have a method for identifying the location of the pex after the concrete is poured? For the purpose of bolting things to the slab in the future. I personally like my stationary work benches to be bolted down.

Very exciting! Is the in floor heat going to be your only source of heat? I am trying to decide which route to go in my 30x40x12. How expensive was the foam and pex and what size did you use of each, if you don't mind me asking.

I don’t mind. I found two inch foam at a farm tile store. It is 2” with an R-10 value. It was right around $18 a sheet. I was going to go to the big box store and get the Dow pink board but this is the stuff the concrete guys told me to get.

The pex I just picked up at Menards. I used 2400 feet. I think a 1200 foot roll was $350. I found it cheaper online but it was kind of a last minute decision to finally do the floor heat. The white tubing was a garage sale score. I got 600’ for $10.

I also plan on using a hanging gas furnace.

I put pex down in my 32 x 28 in 2008. Have yet to connect it, but didn't want to lose the one chance to put it down. I also have a hanging furnace and a minisplit for AC and heat. The hanging furnace gets up to temp quickly (propane). The mini split keeps it there.

Like the in floor heat. My cousin put it in his shop, and it's a wild feeling to walk on that warm concrete in the middle of winter. If I were building a shop from scratch I would go radiant for sure.

I worked the weekend on the roof. I had to stop early Saturday for a st. Paddy’s day event my wife and I had to attend. Last night I worked until the sun went down. I only have left about a half of a square and then the ridge vent on one dormer and the last third of the main peak.

As for the zoning, I'm not surprised given the proximity to neighbors, I'm kinda surprised there weren't any CC&Rs. My camp in Marquette County is zoned R-1 and it astounds me as it was ag forever before it was given to me but when I enquired about a driveway I was informed it was r-1.

I love the in-floor heat, I suspect with your insulation it won't be difficult to maintain a minimum temp at all.

I'd love an attached shop but my wife is vehemently against it for odor issues as she simply refuses to believe that an exhaust fan drawing through the house into the shop will be sufficient, or even effective at all.

I haven’t updated in a while, I went on a cruise and spent some time in florida for spring break. Things have been slow on the barn. I cleaned up the yard that looked pretty bad. I have spray foam coming on Friday. I have to get all the windows installed or at least framed out before he gets here. I also got a 8x7 garage door to install really quick. I have a busy week. I am also doing all the prep work for the spray foam guy to save a few dollars.

I got one window installed. Took me 38 minutes from start to finish.

The upstairs area is somewhat undecided. It may become a guest suite for when family visits from out of town or it may just be just for storage.

I got my spray foam done today. Very happy with the results. Went 2 inches thick.

Now I need to finish the wiring and figure out where I am going to place all my lights. Then I will drywall the ceilings and do some blow in.

What is the installed R-value of 2" spray foam? The project is coming along well, can't wait to start on my shop but we have to get the house built first and so far there's tremendous variables in what it could cost with seemingly minor details. As a result my shop build could start pretty quick after we move in or in a few years.

The R value of closed cell spray foam is about 7 per inch. I have 2 inches and then the 1.5 inch foam board I put up between the purlins is an R-6 so I’m at about an R-20.

I have been working in the shop here and there. I have some lights up. I think they are in their final spot. I have been moving them around playing with different layouts. Testing it during the day and at night.

I also got power to the sub panel. The inspector gave me the go ahead to power it so I can have a lights and an outlet or two. Then when I get everything wired he will come do his final inspection.

I ended up using fiber in the concrete as well as wire.

It’s been a while since I have posted an update. I’m still plugging away on this thing. The summers are very busy for me so progress was slow. Here are a few pictures.



The siding is done and boy did that take forever!!! I still need to do the little bit of stone work on the front to match the house.

I put up more lights then I probably needed but I didn’t want to many shadows.

I just recently scored a deal on a lift and got that installed last week.
